The Developmental Dynamics between Interest, Self-concept of Ability, and Academic Performance

Abstract. Only a few studies have examined the direction of associations between academic achievement, interest, and sel f-concept of ability simultaneously by using longitudinal data over several school years. To exam ine the cross-lagged relationships between students’ interest, self-concept of ability, and performance in mathematics and reading, longitudinal data from Grade 1 to Grade 7 of comprehensive school was gathered from 216 students. Tämän tutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli selvittää kognitiivisten ja emotionaalisten tekijöiden yhteyttä laskutaidon sujuvuuden intervention vasteeseen. Tarkaste-lun kohteena kognitiivisista tekijöistä olivat lukujonotaidot, työmuisti, fonolo-ginen tietoisuus sekä nopean nimeämisen taidot, emotionaalisista matemaattinen kiinnostus ja minäkäsitys. Tutkimus koostui Jyväskylän Yliopiston ja Niilo Mäki Instituutin Minäpystyvyys ja oppimisinterventiot –tutkimushankkeen aineistosta, joka on kerätty Keski- ja Itä-Suomen kouluissa 2.-5. –luokkalaisilta oppilailta vuosina 2013-2014. Merit, Competition, Distinction

The article presents a critique of competition by introducing a concept called 'distinction'. Competition is thought to work as a guarantee of the fairness of meritocratic procedures (merit-based recruiting in the job market or e.g. entrance examinations). However, fairness created by competition is, even at its best, only relative. This critique is then used a part of a larger critique of the role of merit in society.

Tämän tutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli selvittää, eroavatko komorbidilapset emotionaalisten tekijöiden suhteen lapsista, joilla on vain toinen oppimisen vaikeus tai ei vaikeutta lainkaan. Oppimisvaikeuksiksi katsottiin tässä tutkimuksessa oppilaat, joilla havaittiin hitautta lukemisen ja/tai laskemisen sujuvuudessa. Becoming interested during teacher education

In this article we examine first-year student teachers’ possibilities to become interested in professional issues in teacher education. We study the phenomenon of becoming interested among first-year student teachers via three different kinds of data. We analysed our data through John Dewey’s definition of interest, where a person has an interest if s/he is actively keen on some object that has personal meaning for her/him. According to our data, student teachers adopt an object of interest that teacher educators provide. Learners found it difficult to find the objects of interests by themselves, and it was exceptional for them to find personal meaning and an active state of interest. This …
Parental Trust in Teachers and Children’s Interest in Reading and Math: A Longitudinal Study

This study investigated cross-lagged associations between parental trust in a child’s teacher and children’s academic interest across Grades 1–4 in primary school. Parents rated trust in their child’s teacher, and 576 children reported their interest in reading and math at each grade. The results showed that high parental trust in a child’s teacher predicted the child’s high interest in math. In addition, the child’s high interest in reading in Grade 2 was related to the father’s subsequent trust in the teacher. peerReviewed

In light of concerns about decreasing news use, a decline in interest in political news or even active avoidance or resistance of news in general, the idea of ‘incidental news’ has been seen as a possible remedy. Generally, ‘incidental news’ refers to the ways in which people encounter information about current events through media when they were not actively seeking the news.
