A new recoil distance technique using low energy coulomb excitation in inverse kinematics
2011
Abstract We report on the first experiment combining the Recoil Distance Doppler Shift technique and multistep Coulomb excitation in inverse kinematics at beam energies of 3–10 A MeV. The setup involves a standard plunger device equipped with a degrader foil instead of the normally used stopper foil. An array of particle detectors is positioned at forward angles to detect target-like recoil nuclei which are used as a trigger to discriminate against excitations in the degrader foil. The method has been successfully applied to measure lifetimes in 128Xe and is suited to be a useful tool for experiments with radioactive ion beams.
Definition of an appropriate free dynamics and the physical S-matrix in multichannel hyperradial adiabatic scattering
2010
In the hyperradial adiabatic (HA) treatment of the three-body problem the total wave function is i expanded as ΨHA(R, ξ, η) = R−5/2 ∑iχi(R)φi(R|ξ, η),where R denotes the hyperradius and (ξ , η) are internal hyperangles. Integration over ξ and η converts the Schrödinger equation into a system of coupled hyperradial equations. It is a well-known fact that, within the HA approach, the non-adiabatic corrections that couple channels converging to the same asymptotic configuration can show an unphysical long-range behavior ∼ 1/R. Though the latter is of purely kinematic origin and arises from the use of the hyperradius instead of the pertinent Jacobi variables, it is nevertheless the source of the…
Hydrodynamic modelling of ejecta shrapnel in the Vela supernova remnant
2013
Many supernova remnants (SNRs) are characterized by a knotty ejecta structure. The Vela SNR is an excellent example of remnant in which detached clumps of ejecta are visible as X-ray emitting bullets that have been observed and studied in great detail. We aim at modelling the evolution of ejecta shrapnel in the Vela SNR, investigating the role of their initial parameters (position and density) and addressing the effects of thermal conduction and radiative losses. We performed a set of 2-D hydrodynamic simulations describing the evolution of a density inhomogeneity in the ejecta profile. We explored different initial setups. We found that the final position of the shrapnel is very sensitive …
Absolute kinematics of radio source components in the complete S5 polar cap sample
2004
We observed the thirteen extragalactic radio sources of the complete S5 polar cap sample at 15.4 GHz with the Very Long Baseline Array, on 27 July 1999 (1999.57) and 15 June 2000 (2000.46). We present the maps from those two epochs, along with maps obtained from observations of the 2 cm VLBA survey for some of the sources of the sample, making a total of 40 maps. We discuss the apparent morphological changes displayed by the radio sources between the observing epochs. Our VLBA observations correspond to the first two epochs at 15.4 GHz of a program to study the absolute kinematics of the radio source components of the members of the sample, by means of phase delay astrometry at 8.4 GHz, 15.…
Top-quark pair production cross-section measurements with the ATLAS detector
2019
Measurements of the inclusive and differential top-quark pair production cross sections in proton-proton collisions with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider at center-of-mass energies of 8 TeV and 13 TeV are presented. The inclusive measurements reach high precision and are compared to the best available theoretical calculations. Differential measurements of the kinematic properties of the top-quark production are also discussed. These measurements, including results using boosted tops, probe our understanding of top-quark pair production in the TeV regime.
Gravito-magnetic vacuum spacetimes: kinematic restrictions
2003
We show that there are no vacuum solutions with a purely magnetic Weyl tensor with respect to an observer submitted to kinematic restrictions involving first order differential scalars. This result generalizes previous ones for the vorticity-free and shear-free cases. We use a covariant approach which makes evident that only the Bianchi identities are used and, consequently, the results are also valid for non vacuum solutions with vanishing Cotton tensor.
Video-Analysis of the flight of a model aircraft
2011
A video-analysis software tool has been employed in order to measure the steady-state values of the kinematics variables describing the longitudinal behaviour of a radio-controlled model aircraft during take-off, climbing and gliding. These experimental results have been compared with the theoretical steady-state configurations predicted by the phugoid model for longitudinal flight. A comparison with the parameters and performance of the full-size aircraft has also been outlined.
A lumped model for a seismic source
1993
A lumped mechanical model is proposed and solved. This model is dynamically equivalent, in the mean field approximation, to a faulted lithosphere. The transition from the continuous system (modelled according to W. H. Prescott and A. Nur) to the lumped one, has been made by preserving all the relevant features exhibited by the continuous system. In particular the coupling between different components of the stress and strain tensors is suitably taken into account. The dynamics of the lumped system depends on six control parameters fixed by the physical properties of the continuous system. Three of the control parameters are dimensionless and describe: the seismic wave quality factor of the…

Millimeter VLBI of NGC 1052: Dynamics
2016
The LINER galaxy NGC 1052 is an ideal target to study the innermost regions of active galactic nuclei (AGN), given its close distance of about 20 Mpc. The source was observed at 29 epochs from 2005 to 2009 with the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) at 43 GHz. Here, we present a kinematic study of its twin-jet system from a subset of 9 epochs at 43 GHz carried out in 2005 and 2006, finding a bright central feature as the dynamic center. The resulting mean velocities of β = v / c = 0 . 46 ± 0 . 08 and β = 0 . 69 ± 0 . 02 for the western and eastern jet, respectively, give hints towards higher velocities in the eastern jet.
