Revealing Atom-Radical Reactivity at Low Temperature Through the N + OH Reaction

International audience; More than 100 reactions between stable molecules and free radicals have been shown to remain rapid at low temperatures. In contrast, reactions between two unstable radicals have received much less attention due to the added complexity of producing and measuring excess radical concentrations. We performed kinetic experiments on the barrierless N(4S) + OH(2Π) → H(2S) + NO(2Π) reaction in a supersonic flow (Laval nozzle) reactor. We used a microwave-discharge method to generate atomic nitrogen and a relative-rate method to follow the reaction kinetics. Kinetics of the Biosynthesis of Cellulose in Cotton Bolls by Different Light Intensities

PREVIOUS kinetic investigations of the biosynthesis of cellulose in higher plants suggested that the secondary wall cellulose is synthesized by a structure-controlled mechanism (template mechanism)1–5. In order to confirm my assumption I changed the reaction rate by varying the intensity of illumination of the cotton plants. Cotton plants (Gossypium herbaceum) were grown in a glass-house at a mean temperature of 25° C (the night temperatures never were less than 18° C). The intensity of illumination amounted to 4,000, 15,000 and 60,000 lux respectively (mean values). The time of maturity was calculated from the time the flowers were fertilized. Multiple sclerosis patients show an increased spontaneous activity of their peripheral blood monocytes as measured by chemiluminescence

I has been reported that myelin basic protein (BP) reacts extremely sensitively to peroxide, which is formed when monocytes/macrophages are stimulated to produce a "respiratory burst" (RB). We measured the RB activity by means of chemiluminescence in peripheral blood monocytes/macrophages (MO) of 17 MS patients, 5 patients with a viral infection of the CNS, and 14 control persons. The median of the spontaneous RB activity of MS patients compared with the median of our control group showed a highly significant increase (P = 0.0002). Biogas from municipal solid waste landfills: A simplified mathematical model

AbstractMunicipal solid waste (MSW) landfills now represent one of the most important issues related to the waste management cycle. Knowledge of biogas production is a key aspect for the proper exploitation of this energy source, even in the post-closure period. In the present study, a simple mathematical model was proposed for the simulation of biogas production. The model is based on first-order biodegradation kinetics and also takes into account the temperature variation in time and depth as well as landfill settlement. To clarify the interplay of kinetic hole-burning (KHB), structural relaxation, and ligand migration in myoglobin (Mb), we measured time-resolved absorption spectra in the Soret region after photolysis of carbon monoxide Mb (MbCO) in the temperature interval 120-260 K and in the time window 350 ns to 200 ms. The spectral contributions of both photolyzed (Mb * ) and liganded Mb (MbCO) have been analyzed by taking into account homogeneous bandwidth, coupling to vibrational modes, and static conformational heterogeneity. In the present study, we investigated the early signaling events triggered by β-aminobutyric acid (BABA), a well-known priming-mediated plant resistance inducer. Our results indicate that, in contrast to oligogalacturonides (OG), BABA does not elicit typical defense-related early signaling events nor defense-gene expression in grapevine.
