Subpicosecond transient signal spectroscopy of Prodan in dimethylformamide solution.

2008

We report a pump-probe experiment revealing the temporal evolution of subpicosecond evolution of Prodan's excited-state absorption in dimethylformamide. Also, we present calculation of the first spectral moment of this spectral band and estimation of different relaxation components on the subpicosecond time scale.

Validation of a two-dimensional modeling of an externally irradiated slurry photoreactor

2015

Abstract A two-dimensional model describing the behavior of a batch cylindrical photoreactor has been validated through a series of photocatalytic reactivity runs. The light intensity radiation field produced by 1–6 external UV fluorescent lamps was modeled together with Langmuir–Hinshelwood kinetics and 4-nitrophenol (NP) and Degussa P25 TiO 2 were used as the probe molecule and the catalyst, respectively. The experiments were carried out under different conditions of light intensity, photocatalyst amount and substrate concentration. The model parameters were the kinetic constant of substrate adsorption, desorption and degradation and the exponent of the power law expressing the kinetics d…

Probing light-induced conformational transitions in bacterial photosynthetic reaction centers embedded in trehalose-water amorphous matrices.

2004

Abstract The coupling between electron transfer and protein dynamics has been studied in photosynthetic reaction centers (RC) from Rhodobacter sphaeroides by embedding the protein into room temperature solid trehalose–water matrices. Electron transfer kinetics from the primary quinone acceptor (Q A − ) to the photoxidized donor (P + ) were measured as a function of the duration of photoexcitation from 20 ns (laser flash) to more than 1 min. Decreasing the water content of the matrix down to ≈5×10 3 water molecules per RC causes a reversible four-times acceleration of P + Q A − recombination after the laser pulse. By comparing the broadly distributed kinetics observed under these conditions …

Observation of Gravitationally Induced Vertical Striation of Polarized Ultracold Neutrons by Spin-Echo Spectroscopy.

2015

We describe a spin-echo method for ultracold neutrons (UCNs) confined in a precession chamber and exposed to a $|B_0|=1~\text{\mu T}$ magnetic field. We have demonstrated that the analysis of UCN spin-echo resonance signals in combination with knowledge of the ambient magnetic field provides an excellent method by which to reconstruct the energy spectrum of a confined ensemble of neutrons. The method takes advantage of the relative dephasing of spins arising from a gravitationally induced striation of stored UCN of different energies, and also permits an improved determination of the vertical magnetic-field gradient with an exceptional accuracy of $1.1~\text{pT/cm}$. This novel combination …

Hybrid particle-continuum simulations coupling Brownian dynamics and local dynamic density functional theory

2017

We present a multiscale hybrid particle-field scheme for the simulation of relaxation and diffusion behavior of soft condensed matter systems. It combines particle-based Brownian dynamics and field-based local dynamics in an adaptive sense such that particles can switch their level of resolution on the fly. The switching of resolution is controlled by a tuning function which can be chosen at will according to the geometry of the system. As an application, the hybrid scheme is used to study the kinetics of interfacial broadening of a polymer blend, and is validated by comparing the results to the predictions from pure Brownian dynamics and pure local dynamics calculations.

Statistics of reversible bond dynamics observed in force-clamp spectroscopy

2010

We present a detailed analysis of two-state trajectories obtained from force-clamp spectroscopy (FCS) of reversibly bonded systems. FCS offers the unique possibility to vary the equilibrium constant in two-state kinetics, for instance the unfolding and refolding of biomolecules, over many orders of magnitude due to the force dependency of the respective rates. We discuss two different kinds of counting statistics, the event-counting usually employed in the statistical analysis of two-state kinetics and additionally the so-called cycle-counting. While in the former case all transitions are counted, cycle-counting means that we focus on one type of transitions. This might be advantageous in p…

Synthesis ofN=127isotones through (p,n) charge-exchange reactions induced by relativistic208Pb projectiles

2011

The production cross sections of four N=127 isotones ({sup 207}Hg, {sup 206}Au, {sup 205}Pt, and {sup 204}Ir) have been measured using (p,n) charge-exchange reactions, induced in collisions of a {sup 208}Pb primary beam at 1 A GeV with a Be target. These data allow one to investigate the use of a reaction mechanism to extend the limits of the chart of nuclides toward the important r-process nuclei in the region of the third peak of elemental abundance distribution.

Coupling of density wave oscillations in parallel channels with high order modal kinetics: application to BWR out of phase oscillations

2000

Abstract In this paper, we study the behavior of a system formed by two parallel channels coupled to a multimodal kinetics. The first problem that arises is the calculation of the reactivity coefficients for the higher modes. This problem is solved by means of the introduction of distribution factors for a given reactor region which depend on the involved modes. We have also performed a detailed analysis of the different instability types which can be obtained from the model changing the boundary conditions and the feedback gains of the fundamental and first harmonic modes.

On the theory of domain switching kinetics in ferroelectrics

2011

Abstract We investigate theoretically the polarization switching kinetics in ferroelectrics, both bulk and thin films samples. In such substances, the domain walls are pinned by (usually dipole) defects, which are present also in ordered samples as technologically unavoidable impurities. This random interaction with dipole pinning centers results, in particular, in exponentially broad distribution of switching times. Under supposition of low pinning centers concentration, we derive the distribution function of switching times showing that it is not simply Lorentzian (as it was first suggested by Tagantsev et al. [Phys. Rev. B 66 (2002) 214109]), but is a “square of Lorentzian”, which is due…

Poiseuille flow of a Quincke suspension

2014

The controversy of models of dielectric particle suspensions with antisymmetric stress, which predict a nonphysical cusp of the velocity profile in plane Poiseuille flow under the action of the electrical field, is resolved. In the mean-field approximation, the nonlinear kinetic equation is derived for coupled due to the flow translational and rotational motion of the particles. By its numerical solution, it is shown that the velocity profile is smeared due to the translational diffusion of the particles with opposite directions of rotation. The obtained results for the velocity profiles and flow rates as a function of the electric field strength are in qualitative agreement with the existi…
