Two Dimensional (2-D) Modeling of a Flat Plate Photocatalytic Reactor for Oxidation of Indoor Air Pollutants

In this paper we present a two-dimensional (2-D) analysis of a narrow-slit, flat-plate, single-pass, flow-through photocatalytic reactor for air purification. The continuity equation for convection and diffusion in two dimensions, under un-steady-state conditions, was coupled with radiation field modeling and photocatalytic reaction kinetics to model the transient and steady-state behavior of the reactor. Phase separation in thin films: Effect of temperature gradients

We study the phase-separation kinetics of a binary (AB) mixture confined in a thin film of thickness D with a temperature gradient. Starting from a Kawasaki-exchange kinetic Ising model, we use a master-equation approach to systematically derive an extension of the Cahn-Hilliard model for this system. We study the effect of temperature gradients perpendicular to the film with "neutral" (no preference for either A or B) surfaces. We highlight the rich phenomenology and pattern dynamics which arises from the interplay of phase separation and the temperature gradient.

Member 4 of human solute carrier family 7 (SLC7A4) exhibits significant sequence homology with the SLC7 subfamily of human cationic amino acid transporters (hCATs) [Sperandeo, Borsani, Incerti, Zollo, Rossi, Zuffardi, Castaldo, Taglialatela, Andria and Sebastio (1998) Genomics 49, 230–236]. It is therefore often referred to as hCAT-4 even though no convincing transport activity has been shown for this protein. We expressed SLC7A4 in Xenopus laevis oocytes, but could not detect any transport activity for cationic, neutral or anionic amino acids or for the polyamine putrescine. Formation of metastable structures by phase separation triggered by initial composition gradients in thin films.

Phase separation kinetics of a binary (A,B) mixture contained in a thin film of thickness D induced by a quench from the one-phase region into the miscibility gap is studied by simulations using a Cahn-Hilliard-Cook model. The initial randomly mixed state (50% A, 50% B) contains a concentration gradient perpendicular to the film, while the surfaces of the film are "neutral" (no preference for either A or B). In thermal equilibrium, a pattern of large A-rich and B-rich domains must result, separated by domain walls oriented perpendicularly to the external surfaces of the thin film. Abstract A mathematical model based on Weibull parameters was built to describe the joint effect of temperature and pH on thermal inactivation of Bacillus cereus spores (strain INRA TZ415). The effect of these factors on Weibull model parameters ( β , 1/ α ) was also studied. Heat inactivation tests were carried out in acidified carrot broth as vegetable substrate, following a full factorial design at four levels for temperature (80, 85, 90 and 95 °C) and pH (6.2, 5.8, 5.2 and 4.7). Computer Simulations of the Electric Interactions between the Phospholipid Head-Groups and Ionic Admixtures in the Membrane Surface

Some phospholipids (e.g. lecithin) form a system of electric dipoles on the membrane surface layer. In the case of lecithin the positive dipole charge is located on the choline and the negative one on the phosphoric molecule group. These dipoles are arranged almost parallel to the membrane surface. Taking the dipole membrane structure as a base for further investigations, a computer model of the electrostatic interaction between the dipole system and the ionic admixture was investigated. Modeling of the catalytic effects of potassium and calcium on spruce wood gasification in CO2

Abstract Using previously reported thermogravimetric analysis measurements, the effects of calcium and potassium on the char gasification rate of spruce wood were modeled. Spruce wood was leached of inorganic ash elements and doped with measured amounts of potassium and calcium. The wood was gasified in an isothermal thermogravimetric analysis device in CO 2 where the devolatilization of the wood, char formation and char gasification all occurred inside the preheated reactor. Kinetics of thiophene reactive adsorption on Ni/SiO2 and Ni/ZnO.

Abstract Kinetics of thiophene reactive adsorption on Ni/SiO2 and Ni/ZnO was studied by thermal gravimetric analysis at 280–360 °C under 5–40 mbar of thiophene in H2. In the case of Ni/SiO2 the interaction proceeds in two steps: a rapid surface reaction is followed by a slower bulk transformation into Ni3S2. Maximum Ni conversion depends on reaction conditions and observed conversion profiles can be described by an exponential equation corresponding to a reaction of first order relatively to both sulfidable Ni amount and thiophene.
