Knee arthroscopy and exercise versus exercise only for chronic patellofemoral pain syndrome: a randomized controlled trial
2007
BACKGROUND: Arthroscopy is often used to treat patients with chronic patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS). As there is a lack of evidence, we conducted a randomized controlled trial to study the efficacy of arthroscopy in patients with chronic PFPS. METHODS: A total of 56 patients with chronic PFPS were randomized into two treatment groups: an arthroscopy group (N = 28), treated with knee arthroscopy and an 8-week home exercise program, and a control group (N = 28), treated with the 8-week home exercise program only. The arthroscopy included finding-specific surgical procedures according to current recommendations. The primary outcome was the Kujala score on patellofemoral pain and function …

Factors related to excessive patellofemoral loading in rearfoot running
2015
Running is recognized as one of the most popular exercise methods. Furthermore, running related injuries have been under the scope for the last few decades. Synchronous function between the segments of the lower limbs is necessary for efficient locomotion. Patellofemoral pain syndrome is a common exercise related syndrome and multifactorial in nature. The purpose of this study was to measure contact forces and frontal plane moments to detect the factors that are associated with atypically high patellofemoral joint loading in rearfoot striking (RFS) running pattern, and moreover, which could possibly contribute to development of the patellofemoral pain syndrome. 39 team sport female athletes…
Politics in play: the playground movement as a socio-political issue in early twentieth-century Finland
2023
This article studies the history of playgrounds in Finland and focuses on the emergence and implementation of the objectives of the international playground movement in the early twentieth century. Specifically, it examines the relations between supervised playgrounds, women’s emancipation, child welfare policies, and political discussion on social class. In doing so, the article illustrates the transnational circulation and implementation of early twentieth century “child-saving” ideas, such as the playground reform. The analysis is done by cross and close reading a wealth of contemporary texts on playgrounds, such as magazines, newspapers, and archival materials. By tracing the interwoven…
Postoperative Sagittal Balance Has Only a Limited Role in the Development of Adjacent Segment Disease After Lumbar Spine Fusion for Degenerative Lumb…
2022
Study Design. Retrospective additional analysis of a prospective follow-up study. Objectives. We aimed to find out whether poor postoperative sagittal alignment increases revisions for adjacent segment disease (ASD) after lumbar spine fusion (LSF) performed for degenerative lumbar spine disease. Summary of Background Data. Revisions for ASD accumulate over time after LSF for degenerative lumbar spine disease. The etiology of ASD is considered multifactorial. Yet, the role of postoperative sagittal balance in this process remains controversial. Materials and Methods. A total of 215 consecutive patients who had undergone an elective LSF surgery for spinal stenosis with (80%) or without (20%) …

Music-listening as an intervention for chronic pain relief : a case study
2014
The field of audioanalgesia is vast. Research shows a combination of pharmacology and music interventions helps to reduce anxiety and stress, resulting in lower levels of pain, pre- and post-operatively. This study is an exploration of the use of music-listening as a method of pain relief with the knowledge that certain types of music aid in reaching altered states of consciousness. In reaching this state of relaxation, the realisation one’s own methods of pain management and goals towards better health are easier. This paper also discusses the importance of collaboration between various ways of practicing medicine, as well as how vital it is to be aware of one’s body and external stresses …
