Metamorphoses of Shamed Bodies : Sexual Violence in Euripides’s Helen

In this paper I explore the connections between shame and embodiment in Euripides’s play Helen. The paper focuses on the play’s underlying theme of sexual violence and rape, and on the descriptions of metamorphoses that the mythological female victims often undergo in the face of rape. In my analysis on shame and embodiment I apply two insights from Giorgio Agamben’s analysis of the phenomenon of victim shame in The Remnants of Auschwitz. These are, first, the definition according to which shame is “to be consigned to what cannot be assumed”—that is, to be consigned to one’s self, being and physical body—and second, the claim that in shame one is affected by one’s own (bodily) passivity. This essay focuses on the various forms of narrating, mediating, and interpreting selves within and around a book object, the novel S. (2013) by J. J. Abrams and Doug Dorst. The novel S. is an experiment in producing a deceivingly realistic replica of a maltreated library book object, but its discursive practices also rely on familiar literary forms, harking back to epistolary commonplaces, as well as to marginalia, both ancient and modern. The book object S., which carries the text of the novel-within-a-novel, the readers' multilayered markings, and paraphernalia, forms an archive dramatizing the workings of memory, thought, and emotion. Tarkastelen pro gradu -tutkielmassani fiktiivisten henkilöhahmojen tajunnankuvausta Markku Pääskysen romaanissa Vastaavuuksia (Tammi, 2008). Lähtökohta tutkimuksessani on, että kirjallista mieltä ei tule ymmärtää vain kertomuksen maailmaan ja yhteen kokijaan rajoittuvana ilmiönä, vaan asiat on yhdistettävä laajemmaksi kokonaisuudeksi. Kertoja, tarinamaailman henkilöt sekä lukija osallistuvat ja tuovat oman osansa samaan kognitiiviseen toimintaan: mielten konstruointiin ja samalla niiden luentaan. Opinnäytetyö tutkii Fifty Shades of Grey -trilogiaa reseptiotutkimuksen kautta. Tutkielma analysoi pääasiassa internetissä julkaistuja lukijoiden tekstejä ja muita vastaanottoa käsitteleviä tekstejä. Tutkielma pyrkii myös selvittämään millainen vaikutus trilogialla on nykykulttuuriin ja sen erotisoitumiseen.

Systematic reviews and meta-analyses of research play an important role in summarizing current knowledge on the efficacy of the behavior change techniques and mechanisms of action that comprise behavioral interventions. The current reviews in the science of behavior change (SOBC) special issue represent a ‘step change’ in evaluating current evidence on behavior change interventions and mechanisms. This concluding article outlines the key findings and emerging issues identified in the reviews (‘known knowns’), and summarizes the evidence gaps highlighted by the reviews that need to be addressed in future research (‘known unknowns’). Helsingin Sanomien julkaisemassa tietokirjassa Seitsemän miestä (2005) esitetään psykiatrisia diagnooseja Aleksis Kiven Seitsemässä veljeksessä (1870) kuvatuista henkilöistä. Tällainen diagnosoimisen tapa osallistuu kulttuurin diagnostisoitumisen prosessiin – siihen, että spesifit diagnoosinimikkeet saavat yhä keskeisemmän sijan kulttuurissa. Analysoin teokseen kirjattuja diagnosointeja kulttuurisen mielenterveystutkimuksen näkökulmasta.
