The integration of content and language in students’ task answer production in the bilingual classroom
2016
The notion of content and language integration has recently become a key topic of inquiry in research on content and language integrated learning and other kinds of bilingual educational programmes. Understanding what integration is and how it happens is of fundamental importance not only for researchers interested in gauging the possibilities and limitations of bilingual programmes, but also for practitioners seeking optimal ways to support student development. This study investigates integration as it takes place in the context of collaborative writing in the classroom. Drawing on conversation analytic methodology, text production is investigated as a social and sequentially evolving phen…
If you can defend your own point of view, you're good : Norms of voice construction in student writing on an international Master's programme
2019
Abstract This ethnographically oriented study followed the writing experiences of four students on an international masters programme in Finland. Gathering a range of data, the study set out to examine what counts as good writing on a programme with a very diverse student body in which English is used as a lingua franca. Both teachers and students emphasised the importance of arguing one's ‘own point of view’ in academic writing, and teachers often formed impressions of students on the basis of their texts, drawing attention particularly to their use of metadiscourse markers (e.g., self-mentions, attitude markers and hedges). The present article therefore combines a quantitative analysis of…
The Rise of Finnish-Language Popular Literacy Viewed through Correspondence to Newspapers 1856–70
2014
In the mid-19th century, a significant number of persons among the Finnish-speaking rural populace learned to read fluently and write for the first time. One of the first purposes to which Finnish-speakers could put their writing was letters to the press. This paper first provides a brief overview of how rural Finnish-speaking commoners acquired functional literacy. It then examines what letters to newspapers written by self-educated commoners reveal about writers’ motives, the uses to which writing could be put in mid- 19th century Finland, and the tensions which arose when newly literate commoners began to criticize their social superiors in the press and no longer needed their help in re…
Task-Modulated Corticocortical Synchrony in the Cognitive-Motor Network Supporting Handwriting
2019
Abstract Both motor and cognitive aspects of behavior depend on dynamic, accurately timed neural processes in large-scale brain networks. Here, we studied synchronous interplay between cortical regions during production of cognitive-motor sequences in humans. Specifically, variants of handwriting that differed in motor variability, linguistic content, and memorization of movement cues were contrasted to unveil functional sensitivity of corticocortical connections. Data-driven magnetoencephalography mapping (n = 10) uncovered modulation of mostly left-hemispheric corticocortical interactions, as quantified by relative changes in phase synchronization. At low frequencies (~2–13 Hz), enhanced …
Afrikkalaisesta nykytaiteesta kirjoittamisen haasteet. Näyttelyluetteloiden risteävät diskurssit
2015

2012
Tutkimuksen tavoitteena on selvittää, kuinka sanaston käyttö kehittyy suomi toisena kielenä -oppijoiden teksteissä. Tarkastelun kohteena on sanavaraston rikkaus eli leksikaalinen diversiteetti. Aineistona on 1197 aikuisten ja koululaisten eri tekstilajeja edustavaa kirjoitusta, jotka on arvioitu valmiiksi Eurooppalaisen viitekehyksen mukaisille taitotasoille. Työ on osa Suomen Akatemian ja Jyväskylän yliopiston vuosina 2007-2009 rahoittamaa Cefling hanketta, jonka tehtävänä on selvittää, millaista kielitaito on kullakin Eurooppalaisessa viitekehyksessä kuvatulla kuudella taitotasolla. Tavoitteena on myös selvittää, onko aikuisten ja koululaisten kielenoppimisessa eroja. Keskeisimmät teoreet…
Coordinating collaborative writing in an online environment
2018
This study investigated how university students (n = 28) coordinated their collaborative online writing and what kinds of coordination profiles were found among the students. Further, the study examined the quality of the essays produced by groups of students varying in their combinations of coordination profiles. Students’ written comments on their writing processes (n = 583) were divided into episodes focusing on coordination. Eight different categories of collaborative activities during online collaboration were found. The students’ joint essays (n = 9) were evaluated as high, moderate and low according to the number of topics, key concepts, and integration of Internet sources in the ess…
University Students´ Knowledge Construction during Face to Face Collaborative Writing
2014
Collaborative writing combines social processes of writing with cognitive knowledge construction processes, and thus may lead to deeper learning than individual working. This study examined students’ knowledge construction during face-to-face collaborative writing. University students (n = 21) prepared themselves for the collaborative task by reading about developmental theories in a course book and writing individual summaries of them. In small groups, the students discussed each others’ summaries and wrote a joint essay on one of the theories. The data comprise the students’ individual summaries (n = 21), the students’ discussions during the essay writing (8177 speech turns), and the stud…
