The collection of church art of the Valamo monastery belongs to worthy rarities. Due to the evacuation from Karelia to Finland, collection survived almost complete. Despite the fact that the collection is well known to specialists in Finland and Russia, the research processes is just beginning. Especially little information exists about the icons of earlier period than of the 18th century. Almost nothing is known about the number of them, neither origins nor something about the painters of them. Vuosina 1941-1944 toteutettiin Suomen idästä miehittämillä alueilla lähihistoriamme laajin suomenheimoiseen kulttuuriperintöön kohdistuneista hankkeista. Lyhyessä ajassa tiedemiesten onnistui kerätä merkittävät kokoelmat suullista kansantietoutta miehitetylle alueelle jääneeltä väestöltä, Suomeen saapuneilta pakolaisilta, maahan saksalaiselta miehitysalueelta siirretyiltä inkeriläisiltä sekä suomensukuisilta sotavangeilta. Sodan autioittamista asumuksista, kalmismailta ja tsasounista ennätettiin hankkia myös laaja kansatieteellinen esinekokoelma.
