OnMLM: An Online Formulation for the Minimal Learning Machine
2019
Minimal Learning Machine (MLM) is a nonlinear learning algorithm designed to work on both classification and regression tasks. In its original formulation, MLM builds a linear mapping between distance matrices in the input and output spaces using the Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) algorithm. Although the OLS algorithm is a very efficient choice, when it comes to applications in big data and streams of data, online learning is more scalable and thus applicable. In that regard, our objective of this work is to propose an online version of the MLM. The Online Minimal Learning Machine (OnMLM), a new MLM-based formulation capable of online and incremental learning. The achievements of OnMLM in our…
Extreme Minimal Learning Machine
2018
Extreme Learning Machine (ELM) and Minimal Learning Machine (MLM) are nonlinear and scalable machine learning techniques with randomly generated basis. Both techniques share a step where a matrix of weights for the linear combination of the basis is recovered. In MLM, the kernel in this step corresponds to distance calculations between the training data and a set of reference points, whereas in ELM transformation with a sigmoidal activation function is most commonly used. MLM then needs additional interpolation step to estimate the actual distance-regression based output. A natural combination of these two techniques is proposed here, i.e., to use a distance-based kernel characteristic in M…
Monte Carlo Simulations of Au38(SCH3)24 Nanocluster Using Distance-Based Machine Learning Methods
2020
<div> <div> <div> <p>We present an implementation of distance-based machine learning (ML) methods to create a realistic atomistic interaction potential to be used in Monte Carlo simulations of thermal dynamics of thiolate (SR) protected gold nanoclusters. The ML potential is trained for Au38(SR)24 by using previously published, density functional theory (DFT) -based, molecular dynamics (MD) simulation data on two experimentally characterized structural isomers of the cluster, and validated against independent DFT MD simulations. This method opens a door to efficient probing of the configuration space for further investigations of thermal-dependent electronic and opti…
Using deep neural networks for kinematic analysis: Challenges and opportunities
2020
Kinematic analysis is often performed in a lab using optical cameras combined with reflective markers.\ud With the advent of artificial intelligence techniques such as deep neural networks, it is now possible\ud to perform such analyses without markers, making outdoor applications feasible. In this paper I summarise\ud 2D markerless approaches for estimating joint angles, highlighting their strengths and limitations.\ud In computer science, so-called ‘‘pose estimation” algorithms have existed for many years. These methods\ud involve training a neural network to detect features (e.g. anatomical landmarks) using a process called\ud supervised learning, which requires ‘‘training” images to be …
Instance-Based Multi-Label Classification via Multi-Target Distance Regression
2021
Interest in multi-target regression and multi-label classification techniques and their applications have been increasing lately. Here, we use the distance-based supervised method, minimal learning machine (MLM), as a base model for multi-label classification. We also propose and test a hybridization of unsupervised and supervised techniques, where prototype-based clustering is used to reduce both the training time and the overall model complexity. In computational experiments, competitive or improved quality of the obtained models compared to the state-of-the-art techniques was observed. peerReviewed
A Successful Crowdsourcing Approach for Bird Sound Classification
2023
Automated recorders are increasingly used in remote sensing of wildlife, yet automated methods of processing the audio remains challenging. Identifying animal sounds with machine learning provides a solution, but optimizing the models requires annotated training data. Producing such data can require much manual effort, which could be alleviated by engaging masses to contribute to research and share the workload. Birdwatchers are experts on identifying bird vocalizations and form an ideal focal audience for a citizen science project aiming for the required multitudes of annotated avian audio data. For this purpose, we launched a web portal that was targeted and advertised to Finnish birdwatc…
Decoding Individual differences and musical preference via music-induced movement.
2022
AbstractMovement is a universal response to music, with dance often taking place in social settings. Although previous work has suggested that socially relevant information, such as personality and gender, are encoded in dance movement, the generalizability of previous work is limited. The current study aims to decode dancers’ gender, personality traits, and music preference from music-induced movements. We propose a method that predicts such individual difference from free dance movements, and demonstrate the robustness of the proposed method by using two data sets collected using different musical stimuli. In addition, we introduce a novel measure to explore the relative importance of dif…
Hyperspectral Imaging for Non-invasive Diagnostics of Melanocytic Lesions
2022
Malignant melanoma poses a clinical diagnostic problem, since a large number of benign lesions are excised to find a single melanoma. This study assessed the accuracy of a novel non-invasive diagnostic technology, hyperspectral imaging, for melanoma detection. Lesions were imaged prior to excision and histopathological analysis. A deep neural network algorithm was trained twice to distinguish between histopathologically verified malignant and benign melanocytic lesions and to classify the separate subgroups. Furthermore, 2 different approaches were used: a majority vote classification and a pixel-wise classification. The study included 325 lesions from 285 patients. Of these, 74 were invasi…
Differentiating Malignant from Benign Pigmented or Non-Pigmented Skin Tumours—A Pilot Study on 3D Hyperspectral Imaging of Complex Skin Surfaces and …
2022
Several optical imaging techniques have been developed to ease the burden of skin cancer disease on our health care system. Hyperspectral images can be used to identify biological tissues by their diffuse reflected spectra. In this second part of a three-phase pilot study, we used a novel hand-held SICSURFIS Spectral Imager with an adaptable field of view and target-wise selectable wavelength channels to provide detailed spectral and spatial data for lesions on complex surfaces. The hyperspectral images (33 wavelengths, 477–891 nm) provided photometric data through individually controlled illumination modules, enabling convolutional networks to utilise spectral, spatial, and skin-surface mo…
Virtual Resource Allocation for Wireless Virtualized Heterogeneous Network with Hybrid Energy Supply
2022
In this work, two novel virtual user association and resource allocation algorithms are introduced for a wireless virtualized heterogeneous network with hybrid energy supply. In the considered system, macro base stations (MBSs) are supplied by the grid power and small base stations (SBSs) have the energy harvesting capability in addition to the grid power supplement. Multiple infrastructure providers (InPs) own the physical resources, i.e., BSs and radio resources. The Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs) are able to recent these resources from the InPs and operate the virtualized resources for providing services to different users. In particular, aiming to maximize the overall utility …
