Yksityisen tekstilajin salassa muotoutuvia piirteitä on vaikeampi seurata kuin vapaasti luettavien lehtitekstien tai julkisten asiakirjojen genremuutoksia. This PhD study explores multilingualism in Finnish language youth radio broadcasting, with interactional and ethnographic data from Sweden Finnish and Finnish youth radio broadcasting. The interactional data consist of audio recordings from radio programs, while the ethnographic data consist of observations, logbook notes and interviews. The data were recorded and collected during the summer of 2005 from Radio Sweden’s (SR) Finnish language radio station Sisuradio and its youth program Klubi-Klubben, and simultaneously from Finnish YleX, from its X-Ryhmä and YleX Tänään programs. The aim of the study is to explore situational, cultural and pragmatic factors that might trigger code-switching during informal conversations outside of the classroom at school among bilingual adolescents in Haparanda, Helsinki and Stockholm. An attempt is made to clarify different functions of code-switching, i.e. why bilingual adolescents code-switch from Swedish to Finnish and vice versa. The conversational data, consisting of video-recorded group and pair conversations, was collected in 2014–2015 at six junior high schools in Haparanda, Helsinki and Stockholm. The Banat has been one of Europe’s most multilingual regions since the 18th century. From the 19th century European intellectuals have been engaged in building nations, which has resulted in the marginalization of multilingualism in many forms. The monolingual literary novel has been described as one of the important instruments in this process. Digital Games as a Source of English Vocabulary for Finnish Writers

The material for this paper comes from Finnish people who wrote about their experiences of the music of digital games. We collected 184 texts, all but one written in Finnish. There is relatively little code-switching into English at the clause level, but the vocabulary of the texts is influenced by English on a continuum from clearly English words such as comfy to established loanwords such as uniikki (‘unique’). We will consider how the influence of the English language used both in the games and in discussions about them characterizes the vocabulary of these texts and how the English language enables the authors to enter the game world. peerReviewed

Perinteisesti kieli on jaettu kahtia puhuttuun ja kirjoitettuun kielimuotoon. Uudet median muodot, kuten internet ja tekstiviestit, ovat kuitenkin herättäneet keskustelua siitä, pitäisikö kirjoitetun ja puhutun lisäksi ottaa huomioon niin sanottu kolmas kielimuoto: kirjoitettu keskustelu, jossa on sekä puhe- että kirjakielen piirteitä. Tässä tutkimuksessa olen tarkastellut yhden internetin keskustelufoorumin, Rautaneidon, kielellistä variaatiota.
