Coordinating collaborative writing in an online environment
2018
This study investigated how university students (n = 28) coordinated their collaborative online writing and what kinds of coordination profiles were found among the students. Further, the study examined the quality of the essays produced by groups of students varying in their combinations of coordination profiles. Students’ written comments on their writing processes (n = 583) were divided into episodes focusing on coordination. Eight different categories of collaborative activities during online collaboration were found. The students’ joint essays (n = 9) were evaluated as high, moderate and low according to the number of topics, key concepts, and integration of Internet sources in the ess…
Wage-setting coordination in a small open economy
2022
This paper studies wage-setting coordination in a two-sector, open economy dynamic stochastic general equilibrium model. Two large sectoral unions anticipate the effects of their wage demands on aggregate variables. In an open economy, there are externalities that the unions can take into account to increase aggregate welfare, but the strategic interaction between the sectoral unions tends to erode this gain. When wage coordination takes place through a wage norm set by either of the sectors, this minimizes the strategic interaction. However, wage norms create welfare losses as sector-specific wage adjustment is required to make an efficient adjustment to shocks. Peer reviewed
Information Integration, Coordination Failures, and Quality of Prescribing
2022
Poor information flows hamper coordination, potentially leading to suboptimal decisions in health care. We examine the effects of a large-scale policy of health information integration. We use the staggered adoption of a nationwide electronic prescribing system over four years in Finland and prescription-level administrative data. Our results show no discernible effect on the probability of co-prescribing harmful drugs on average, but the heterogeneity analysis reveals that this probability reduces in rural regions, by 35 percent. This substantial reduction is driven by interacting prescriptions from different physicians and generalists. Information integration can therefore improve the coo…
Use of deeper plantar flexor muscles in low torque isometric and concentric plantar flexion tasks
2016
Coordination of a task such as plantar flexion might seem simple, but is in reality achieved through the activation of several muscles—muscles that play an important role in locomotion and posture control. These can be divided in to two groups, superficial and deep plantar flexors. It has been shown that although people usually produce certain well learned movements very similarly, some variability in the coordination might occur. This is also the case with the ankle plantar flexors as shown by Finni et al. (2006) and Masood et al (2014). Purpose of the study was to examine whether some individuals use their deeper plantar flexors to a greater extent than others and to see whether the relat…
The role of personal contacts of foreign subsidiary managers in the coordination of industrial multinationals : the case of Finnish subsidiaries in P…
2004
This study attempts to extend current knowledge of inter- and intra-firm relationships in industrial markets. In particular, the study seeks to illuminate the distinction between individual and organizational actors in business-to-business markets as well as the coexistence of formal and informal mechanisms of coordination in multinational corporations. The main questions addressed are: 1) what factors influence the occurrence of personal contacts of foreign subsidiary managers in industrial multinational corporations? and 2) how such personal contacts enable coordination in industrial markets and within multinational corporations? The theoretical context of the study is based on: 1) the int…
