Lessons learned from a community engagement initiative within Irish higher education

This paper focuses on a community–university partnership built around a programme of study co-created by residents of a disadvantaged community and situated, for the most part, within that community. The aim of this paper is to share lessons learned from this community engagement initiative, as identified through a research study which ran concurrent to the programme. The study involved 41 interviews (18 individual interviews and 23 focus groups) over a two-year period with 28 participants. Resisting within the neoliberalising academy: reflections on doing transformative doctoral research

This paper reflects on the authors' experiences in doing transformative research in two countries of South East Europe - Greece and Bosnia and Herzegovina, during their doctoral studies abroad – United Kingdom and Finland. Within the neoliberal context of academia which celebrates ‘success stories’, research committed to change and action may not always be welcomed and may even be considered as a pathway to ‘failure’. Reflecting on this type of 'failure' and 'opportunity' through our personal stories, we debate how we can resist neoliberalisation in academia from within and promote an anti-oppressive and empowering place of hope and change. peerReviewed

Higher education graduates need 21st-century skills, both learning skills and competences for working with technology. However, research indicates an insufficient integration of ICTs into teaching and learning. In this paper, we examine students’ perception of various technology-based issues: (a) ICT integration within a Slovenian university’s learning environment, (b) teachers as role models for ICT use, and (c) the processes of collaboration and creativity as integrative parts featured in learning technologies. The Literary Construction of Journalism Education: A Review of the Course Literature in the Nordic Academic Journalism Programmes

This article investigates the course literature in the curricula of 12 major journalism schools at Northern European universities. This analysis of the course literature listed in documentation of bachelor programmes traces how journalism education institutions constitute their knowledge base on journalism. It is found that Nordic journalism students are required to read almost four books per study credit on average. Undergraduate academic journalism programmes are professionally oriented, and professional literature by non-scientific publishers occupies a major place in the course literature.
