Narratives on access to higher education : educational leadership looking beyond barriers
2017
This research aims to understand the social, economic and political complexities that surround a learner’s access to higher education in South Africa. The objective of the study is therefore to particularly examine the enabling and constraining factors in accessing higher education for the participants in the study. The study looks at the experiences of four young men and women (two men and two women) from South Africa that led to their educational achievements. It weaves their success stories through the complex interwoven social, familial, school and community environments. This twopart paper, published here and in the next issue, focuses on these mandatory language and communication studies at Finnish universities. The first part offers a broad overview of the most recent changes in Finnish educational policy. It outlines the most relevant legislative measures, presents the rationale behind them and looks at the initial responses from those most directly concerned. The second part, published in the next issue, approaches the topic from the perspective of pedagogical practice, and presents …

2021
Multiple benefits but almost as many obstacles : teachers and students' perceptions of the integration English and vocational studies in University o…
2016
Integraatio on opetusmenetelmä, jossa pyritään häivyttämään eri aineiden välisiä rajoja muodostamalla aineiden välille yhteyksiä. Tutkimus toteu…

Emplacing English as lingua franca in international higher education: A spatial perspective on linguistic diversity
2022
Within higher education, internationalisation is increasingly important for students and academics alike. In this context, English as the lingua franca has gained prominence. The ostensible ubiquity of English rests on a particular rendering of the language as unitary, fixed, and undifferentiated. In this paper, we challenge this notion of English and use a spatial approach to explore the multiplicity of Englishes on display within the higher education context. Increasingly, within higher education outside Anglophone countries, English Medium Instruction (EMI) is seen as a crucial indicator of internationalisation: the term ‘international programmes' is often used as a proxy for programmes …
Higher education graduates' employment and the uncertainty of working life.
2012
The aim of this chapter is to examine how the uncertainty and instability of working life is reflected in Finnish polytechnic graduates’ employment. The present study investigates the fields of business and engineering by comparing two graduate cohorts. The societal context in which new graduates enter working life is that of an increasing precariousness in the labour market, which affects higher education graduates as well as the general population. Nowadays, a higher education qualification is not necessarily a guaranteed path to a high income and high social status as it used to be. Insecurity and uncertainty in society and working life can be considered as general features of late moder…
