The purpose of the article is to problematize the relationship between the Nordic democratic public higher education tradition and transnational market driven knowledge economy policies. Vuoden 2010 alussa toteutettu Suomen yliopistokenttää ravistellut yliopistouudistus aiheutti aikanaan kiivasta keskustelua. Finland is among the countries with the highest amount of English-taught programmes in higher education in Europe (Wächter and Maiworm 2008). This article analyses, how the higher education language situation of a small country with a marginal majority language (Finnish) and an official bilingual status (Finnish and Swedish) has historically developed from the setting of “drawing the line” between Finland and Sweden or Finland and Russia (Harle and Moisio 2000) in the 19th century and the early 20th century (nationalism), towards drawing the line between Finnish/Swedish and English in the late 20th century (globalization). Finnish adult students’ perspectives on short-cycle study programmes : motives and evaluations

We investigated how students in Finland perceive short-cycle higher education programmes. In line with the European trend, Finland has piloted short-cycle study programmes in order to attract adult students into higher education. We found that the students were mainly satisfied with their studies, and that their orientations to studies and learning were extrinsic in nature. The strengths of the programme were perceived as related to the flexibility of the studies, the variety of teaching methods, and the extensive contents of the studies. Marja-Liisa Neuvonen-Rauhala tutki ensimmäisenä Suomessa ammattikorkeakoulun jatkotutkintokokeilua.Ammattikorkeakoulujen jatkotutkintokokeilu toteutettiin vuosina 2002–2005. Kokeilun perusteella ammattikorkeakouluihin vakinaistettiin ylemmät ammattikorkeakoulututkinnot. Jatkotutkintokokeilua edelsi kiista ammattikorkeakoulujen ylempien tutkintojen tarpeellisuudesta. Erityisesti yliopistot vastustivat maisteritasoisten tutkintojen järjestämistä ammattikorkeakouluissa.
