An assessment of the ethical dimensions that impact on corruption
2006
This paper addresses the ethical dimensions of corruption. Corruption in the form of bribery is widespread in the developing world and this includes Mauritius. Corruption assessed in absolute terms is unethical. However, if one were to use relativistic views, one would make allowances for ‘mild’ forms of corruption like seeking favours to obtain unwarranted advantages or paying bribes in the form of ‘speed-up gratuities’. Our study shows that in many contexts, acts of corruption are accepted and justified either on the basis of the gains they bring to the individual who offered the bribe or undertake to seek the particular favour. It depends on the values prevailing in particular societies,…
Causes of Demand for International Bribery
2007
This paper examines rational and psychological decision-making models. Descriptive and normative methodologies such as attribution theory, schema theory, prospect theory, ambiguity model, game theory, and expected utility theory are discussed. The definition of culture is reviewed, and the relationship between culture and decision making is also highlighted as many organizations use a cultural-ethical decision-making model.
Revisiting the Salt Lake City Olympic scandal: Would the outcome be different today?
2016
Many international sport organizations face bribery scandals resulting from its event bidding process. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) faced this type of scandal with the 2002 Olympic Winter Games. Two members of the Salt Lake City Organizing Committee (SLOC) faced 15 criminal charges from providing more than US$1.2 million in cash and gifts to entice IOC members to support its bid. Ultimately both SLOC members were acquitted of all charges. Can a new interpretation of the United States’ anti-bribery law, the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA), be effective in preventing similar sport scandals? peerReviewed
What can Bilfinger teach Olympic sponsors?
2016
Bilfinger SE (Bilfinger) is a leading international engineering and services group (Bilfinger.com, 2015), and was a local sponsor of the 2014 FIFA World Cup. The company is accused of paying bribes through its subsidiary company, Mauell, (dw. com, 2015) to public officials in Brazil for contracts related to the 2014 World Cup (Cassin, 2015). The corruption allegations relate to orders to equip security command centers at twelve host cities during the 2014 World Cup in Brazil (dw.com, 2015). Because Brazil hosted the 2014 FIFA World Cup and will host the 2016 Summer Olympic Games, companies need to consider the risks of many international anti-corruption laws, such as Brazil’s anti-corruptio…
Using a Rhetorical Framework to Predict Corruption
2008
The field of rhetoric provides unique frameworks and tools for understanding the role of language in moral reasoning and corruption. Drawing on a discursive understanding of the self, we focus on how the rhetoric of conversations constructs and shapes our moral reasoning and moral behavior. Using rhetorical appeals and a moral development framework, we construct three propositions that use variation in the rhetoric of conversations to identify and predict corruption. We discuss some of the implications of our model.
Corruption and Hosophobia
2012
This paper discusses the relationship between corruption and purity. It draws on resesarch on corruption in political science and research on hosophobia (fear of the impure) in organization studies. The paper presents a theory of corruption based on failure of separation between the public and the private, and discusses rules of separation, which are crucial for upholding the illusion of public purity. However, this theory of corruption is complemented by the concept of hosophobia to show how organizations have dual relationship to corruption. Drawing on two Swedish cases, the paper intends to show hosophobia in the everyday functioning of and organization, and how occasional cleansing proc…
How can sport sponsors comply with international corruption laws?
2017
Sport sponsorships can help a brand achieve commercial objectives such as direct sales, or brand awareness. International sporting events are being hosted by nations with a “bribery-friendly” business culture. The nexus between anticorruption laws and these “bribery-friendly” business cultures create a tension for sport sponsors. Violations of applicable anticorruption laws may lead to significant fines, criminal sanctions and negative publicity. It is imperative that sport sponsors know and comply with these laws. This chapter aims to discuss bribery law, identify potential red flags that may indicate violations, and offer recommendations for legal compliance. peerReviewed
