Kielirajat ylittävää kielipolitiikkaa ja toimintaa kieliparipäiväkodissa
2022
2011
Tutkimus käsittelee luokanopettajien kokemia tunteita kodin ja koulun yhteistyössä. Tarkoituksena oli selvittää, millaisia vaiheita kodin ja koulun välisen luottamussuhteen rakentumisessa voidaan erottaa luokanopettajien kuvauksen perusteella sekä millaisia tunteita opettajat kokevat luottamussuhteen rakentumisen eri vaiheissa. Aineistonkeruun menetelmänä käytettiin teemahaastattelua ja tutkimusaineisto koostui viiden luokanopettajan haastatteluista. Aineisto kerättiin syksyllä 2010 ja analysoitiin sisällönanalyysin menetelmällä. Tutkimusaineiston perusteella syntyi kolme kodin ja koulun välisen luot-tamussuhteen rakentumisen vaihetta: luottamusta rakentava, koetteleva ja syventävä vaihe. N…
Sisarusten hoidon järjestäminen kun perheeseen syntyy vauva
2016
TIIVISTELMÄ Huupponen Mari. 2016. Sisarusten hoidon järjestäminen kun perheeseen syntyy vauva. Varhaiskasvatustieteen pro gradu–tutkielma. Jyväskylän yliopisto. Varhaiskasvatuksen laitos. 70 sivua.

Reading and math skills development among Finnish primary school children before and after COVID-19 school closure
2022
AbstractThis study quantified the possible learning losses in reading and math skills among a sample of Finnish Grade 3 children (n = 198) who spent 8 weeks in distance learning during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in spring 2020. We compared their reading and math skill development trajectories across Grades 1, 2, and 4 to a pre-COVID sample (N = 378). We also examined if gender, parental education, maternal homework involvement, and child’s task-avoidant behavior predict children’s academic skills at Grade 4 differently in the pre-COVID sample compared with the COVID sample. Children’s reading and math skills were tested, mothers reported their education and homework involvement…
The effects of social anxiety on alcohol and cigarette use across adolescence: Results from a longitudinal twin study in Finland.
2016
Conflicting reports exist on the direction of the relationship between social anxiety (SA) and alcohol/cigarette use (AU/CU) and alcohol/nicotine dependence (AD/ND), with both positive and negative associations reported. A prospective, longitudinal sample of Finnish twins (n = 1,906) was used to test potential explanations for these discrepancies. Specifically, this study used peer, parent, and teacher ratings of SA, and a clinical interview screening item for social anxiety disorder (SAD-Sc) to examine associations between SA and AU/CU and AD/ND from early adolescence into young adulthood. Peer-rated SA was negatively associated with AU, CU, and AD from age 14 through age 22, implying a pr…
Association of childhood adversities and home atmosphere with functioning in old age: the Helsinki birth cohort study
2019
Objectivechildhood adversities have been linked with adverse health outcomes, but less is known about the long-term consequences of childhood home atmosphere. We investigated whether childhood adversities and home atmosphere were associated with physical and mental functioning in older age.Methodsin the Helsinki Birth Cohort Study 2003, participants born in the year 1934–44 had data available on nine childhood home atmosphere items, e.g. whether it was supportive and warm (sum score ranged between 0 and 36, higher score indicating better atmosphere), and nine childhood adversities, e.g. unemployment and divorce (sum score 0–9, coded into no; one; and two or more adversities) assessed in 200…
Older persons with signs of frailty in a home-based physical exercise intervention : baseline characteristics of an RCT
2019
Background Increasing the level of physical activity among persons with signs of frailty improves physical functioning. There is a lack of long-term supervised physical exercise intervention studies including a validated definition of frailty. Aims To present baseline characteristics of persons with signs of frailty participating in a randomized long-term home-based physical exercise trial (HIPFRA), and to study associations between the severity of frailty, functional independence and health-related quality-of-life (HRQoL). Methods Three hundred persons, ≥ 65 years old and with signs of frailty (assessed by Fried´s phenotype criteria) were recruited from South Karelia, Finland and randomize…
Integration of an in-home monitoring system into home care nurses' workflow: A case study.
2019
Abstract Background The healthcare system faces a major challenge in caring for an increasingly ageing population as this task requires more resources than are currently available. Adopting monitoring technologies could enable more efficient care practices and support ageing in place. Objectives To investigate how the use of an in-home motion monitoring system can be integrated into home care nurses’ workflows and to uncover the factors behind system adoption. Design A single case study adopting a qualitative approach. Setting A home care unit serving older adults living in independent living residences within an apartment complex. Method Multiple data collection methods were used including…
Older adults’ activity destinations before and during COVID-19 restrictions: From a variety of activities to mostly physical exercise close to home
2021
The aim was to study various types of older adult's activity destinations (counts, frequency of visitation, and distance from home) in the pre-COVID-19 era, and to study prospectively how COVID-19-related regulations limiting mobility affected these. Using a map-based questionnaire, 75-85-year-old participants reported activity destinations, that is, any destinations for physical exercise, destinations facilitating one's outdoor mobility, and destinations for other activities, which they had visited several times during the past month. At baseline, a variety of activity destinations was reported, but during COVID-19, destinations reported markedly declined in number, they were reported pred…
