Development of Numeracy and Literacy Skills in Early Childhood—A Longitudinal Study on the Roles of Home Environment and Familial Risk for Reading an…
2021
This study examines the direct and indirect effects of home numeracy and literacy environment, and parental factors (parental reading and math difficulties, and parental education) on the development of several early numeracy and literacy skills. The 265 participating Finnish children were assessed four times between ages 2.5 and 6.5. Children’s skills in counting objects, number production, number sequence knowledge, number symbol knowledge, number naming, vocabulary, print knowledge, and letter knowledge were assessed individually. Parents (N = 202) reported on their education level, learning difficulties in math and reading (familial risk, FR), and home learning environment separately fo…
What, where, when and how : Finnish children’s perceptions of learning in preschool
2021
To be able to support young children in learning to learn—an ability that requires adapting often-unprecedented changes in society—teachers need to be aware of the ways in which children understand learning. In this qualitative study, 177 micro-interviews conducted with 41 Finnish children were analysed using an abductive method to understand their perceptions of learning in a preschool. Learning was perceived as learning to do or know things. Academic skills and contents, followed by motoric skills and sports, arts and crafts, socio-emotional skills and everyday skills, were mentioned as the learning contents. In addition, intentional teaching, teacher-initiated exercises, practising, cogn…
Luku- ja laskusujuvuuden vaikeuksien yhteisesiintyvyys ja pysyvyys alakouluikäisillä oppilailla
2017
Tulosten perusteella 28–43 %:lla oppilaista, joilla ol…

Physical fitness characteristics and neck and shoulder pain incidence in school‐aged children—A 2‐year follow‐up
2022
Background and Aims Neck and shoulder pain (NSP) is common in school age, but preventative factors have not been identified. The purpose was to study whether a fitness test could be used to predict the incidence of NSP and determine whether good physical fitness characters would be associated with lower NSP incidence in school-aged children at 2-year follow-up. Methods After the invitation to nine schools, 970 children (10–15 years old) agreed to participate. Flexibility, fundamental movement skills, musculoskeletal fitness, and cardiorespiratory fitness measurements included in Finnish Schools on the Move! monitoring system for physical functional capacity were measured at baseline in 2013…
Socioecological correlates of perceived motor competence in 5- to 7-year-old Finnish children
2019
We investigated child, family, and environmental factors associated with young children’s perceptions of locomotor (LM) and object control (OC) skills. The participants comprised 472 children (6.22 ± 0.63) and their parents. The children were assessed for their perception of motor competence in LM and OC skills (using the pictorial scale of Perceived Movement Skill Competence for young children), and actual motor competence (Test of Gross Motor Development 3rd edition and Körperkoordinationstest Für Kinder). Anthropometrics were calculated using the children’s body mass index standard deviation scores. A parent questionnaire included questions about child factors (sex, child’s independent w…
The role of teachers’ controlling behaviour in physical education on adolescents’ health-related quality of life : test of a conditional process model
2019
Students’ health-related quality of life (HRQoL) may depend on the extent to which the school environment fostered by their teacher is perceived as autonomy-supportive. We tested a conditional process model in a physical education context in which students’ perception of their teachers’ autonomy-supportive behaviour moderated the relationship between perceived controlling behaviour and HRQoL via need frustration. School students (N = 1042) completed self-report measures of perceived teachers’ autonomy support, perceived controlling behaviour, need frustration, and HRQoL. As predicted, the effect of perceived teachers’ controlling behaviour on HRQoL was mediated by need frustration. Perceive…

Fyysisen aktiivisuuden yhteys yläkoululaisten itse arvioituun terveyteen
2016
TIIVISTELMÄ Suorsa, Kristin. 2016. Fyysisen aktiivisuuden yhteys itse arvioituun terveyteen yläkoululaisilla. Terveystieteiden laitos, Jyväskylän yliopisto, Liikuntalääketiede, pro gradu – tutkielma, 58 s, 3 liitettä. Tutkimuksen tausta ja tarkoitus Fyysinen aktiivisuus tuo lukuisia terveyshyötyjä kaiken ikäisillä. Yläkoululaisista vain noin 20 % täyttää fyysisen aktiivisuuden vähimmäissuosituksen (vähintään 60 min päivässä). Erityisesti alakoulusta yläkouluun siirryttäessä nuorten fyysinen aktiivisuus laskee merkittävästi. Myös itse arvioidun terveyden on havaittu olevan alhaisempi verrattaessa yläkoululaisia alakoululaisiin. Itse arvioitu terveys on paljon käytetty terveysmittari, joka on…
