Distributed leadership in Finnish and Shanghai schools

The present research employed mixed-methods approach to further theorise distributed leadership and to investigate its manifestations in Finnish and Shanghai schools. The whole research comprised two phases. The first phase contained a meta-analysis (Sub-study I), which systematically reviewed 85 key distributed leadership articles published between 2002 and 2013. The meta-analysis identified two main research paradigms: the descriptive-analytical paradigm and the prescriptive-normative paradigm. Differences in physical activity at recess and school-related social factors in four Finnish lower secondary schools

This study investigated the differences in physical activity (PA) at recess and school-related social factors, and described school PA promotion processes and staff experiences at four lower secondary schools from the Finnish Schools on the Move programme. Recess PA, peer relationships at school, relatedness to school, and school climate were assessed via surveys with eighth-grade students in spring 2011 (n ¼ 385) and spring 2013 (n ¼ 373). This thesis examined the engagement of students at lower secondary schools in Finland. Two independent cross-sectional data sets collected in 2010 (N = 821) and 2013 (N = 2485) were analyzed using both variable-centered and personcentered methods. The thesis analyzed the associations between teacher– student relationships, family support for students’ learning, peer support at school, control and relevance of school work, students’ future aspirations and goals, school burnout, behavior at school, and truancy from school. Tarja Seppälä-Pänkäläinen tutki väitöstyössään inklusiivisen eli osallistavan koulun muutosta ja nykyopettajuuden haasteita. Inkluusiolla ymmärretään kaikkien oppijoiden oikeutta osallistua, saada opetusta ja kasvaa tasavertaisena oman asuinalueensa koulussa yhdessä ikätovereidensa kanssa. In recent decades, increased diversity and migration have challenged school staff members’ ways of working. This study aimed to identify the challenges faced by Finnish school staff in supporting students with migrant backgrounds, and to elaborate on how they enact professional agency toward these challenges. The data consist of 15 thematic interviews with staff members across various work positions in two Finnish lower secondary schools. Finnish schools struggle with problem behaviour and need new interventions which are effective, acceptable, and can be implemented with high fidelity in general classrooms. The aim of this study was to examine the effects of Check in check out (CICO) support in decreasing the disruptive behaviours of general education primary school pupils. Tutkimuksen tarkoituksena on selvittää Jyväskylän Rehtori-instituutin Opetustoimen hallinnon ja johtamisen perusopinnot käyneiden luokanopettajien arviointia koulutuksesta suhteessa työelämään. Tarkastelen tutkimuksessani koulutuskokonaisuuden koettua vaikuttavuutta, käsitystä rehtorin työstä sekä näkemystä kouluyhteisöstä. Tutkimusaihe on tärkeä sillä alati muuttuvan maailman ja suomalaisen yhteiskunnan keskellä uudenlaisten johtamistaitojen merkitys korostuu. Koulun merkitys osana yhteiskuntaa on oleellinen.
