Talonomistajat vastaan virkamiehet. Kiistely vuokrasäännöstelystä 1910- ja 1920-luvun vaihteessa
2009
Retail banking in the aftermath of the financial crisis
2018
This thesis considers the effects of the global financial crisis that started in 2008 on the retail banking environment and on banks’ behavior during and in the aftermath of the crisis. The thesis consists of an introductory chapter and three empirical articles that use unique datasets on Finnish cooperative banks. The introductory chapter provides background and an overview of the thesis and considers the effects of the crisis on retail banking from an overall perspective. The empirical articles investigate the roles of a competitive environment, a low interest rate environment, and relationship banking during the crisis and in the post-crisis period. The first article looks at whether the…
From Efficiency to Resilience : Systemic Change towards Sustainability after the COVID-19 Pandemic
2021
The COVID-19 pandemic has revealed the vulnerability of current socio-economic systems and thrown into question the dominant global paradigm geared towards short-term financial efficiency. Although it has been acknowledged for several decades that this paradigm has detrimental impacts on the climate, the environment and global welfare, the pandemic has now offered a grim ‘rehearsal round’ for more serious crises that are to come with the accelerating climate emergency, loss of biodiversity and growing human inequalities. Along with worsening climate change, there are looming risks for mass migrations and armed conflicts as habitats capable of supporting human wellbeing become scarce, such a…
Monitoring the issue arenas of the swine-flu discussion
2013
Purpose: This paper seeks to describe the changing organizational environment and stakeholder debate currently taking place in various “issue arenas” during a crisis. Organizations today need to find and monitor these arenas before being able to communicate with their stakeholders. Design/methodology/approach: Communications of authorities and discussions by citizens are studied and analyzed in a case study related to the 2009 swine flu or influenza A (H1N1) episode in Finland. The organizational point of view is studied through media releases of the National Institute for Health and Welfare (THL), and the citizen point of view through a content analysis of popular discussion online forums …
Hateholders and Brandjacking : Negative Engagement of Customers and Stakeholders
2023
Social and real-time media allow customers and other stakeholders to easily voice their opinions online when brands or organisations fail to meet their expectations. Such outbursts, which are often addressed through corporate public relations and crisis communication, are labelled negative stakeholder engagement. This study focuses on negative stakeholder engagement behaviour on the social media platform Twitter. Data collected from discussions on two telecommunication companies’ Twitter accounts, one in Finland and the other in Australia, are used to illustrate the different forms of negative engagement behaviours. peerReviewed
Testing a methodology to improve organizational learning about crisis communication

The construction of the instrument and its theoretical underpinnings are first explained, after which the series of empirical tests that were implemented to scrutinize the clarity and appropriateness of the indicators as well as the usability of the instrument are presented. Design…
Communication gaps in disaster management: Perceptions by experts from governmental and non-governmental organizations
2012
The complexity of current disasters creates a challenge for crisis communication. This paper aims at identifying gaps in communication in disaster management experienced in practice in order to facilitate learning from those situations. The research was conducted using a qualitative online open-ended questionnaire. It shows that despite the developments in the discipline, communication as an integral part of decision making in disaster management needs to be further developed. The paper provides a practical-oriented overview of the communication constraints in complex crisis situations, which has not been provided so far. This research is part of an international project developing performa…
Quality Indicators for Crisis Communication to Support Emergency Management by Public Authorities
2012
The purpose of this paper is to develop a framework for performance indicators to measure and improve crisis communication preparedness of public authorities. Such an instrument supporting organizational learning has not yet been developed for crisis communication. Literature is used to create a basis and the framework is derived from a process model with various phases integrating communication activities with crisis management. In the paper, the development of the instrument is explained and justified. Furthermore, an example of its use is provided in which the instrument is used for an auditor evaluation of a water contamination case. A next step for future research could be to analyze a…
