Freejazz afrikanamerikkalaisen nationalistisen identiteetin ilmentäjänä 1960-luvun Yhdysvalloissa
2011
Afrikanamerikkalaista nationalistista identiteettiä rakennettiin 1960-luvulla kulttuurin avulla. Afrikanamerikkalaiset nationalistit valitsivat afrikanamerikkalaisten koll…
Europe from Below : Notions of Europe and the European among Participants in EU Cultural Initiatives
2021
In this book, Tuuli Lähdesmäki, Katja Mäkinen, Viktorija L. A. Čeginskas, and Sigrid Kaasik-Krogerus scrutinize how people who participate in cultural initiatives funded and governed by the European Union understand the idea of Europe. The book focuses on three cultural initiatives: the European Capital of Culture, the European Heritage Label, and a European Citizen Campus project funded through the Creative Europe programme. These initiatives are examined through field studies conducted in 12 countries between 2010 and 2018. The authors describe their approach as ‘ethnography of Europeanization’ and conceptualize the attempts at Europeanization in the European Union’s cultural policy as po…
Multilayered cultural identity and the perception of the self
2012
This qualitative study examines the reciprocal relationship between a person’s multilayered cultural identity (MCI) and the concept of self (CoS), that is presented purely on a theoretical level and encompasses various theories. Nowadays, in an increasingly globalising world, it is not enough to merely look at a national, ethnic or other type of identity. It is important to realise that there are different layers in an identity that one can view themselves through. The ways an individual perceives themselves through their multicultural background can also be different. This thesis helps identify the ways a person can see themselves. The thesis also attempts to explain the varied nature of o…
Tibetan Cultural Identity in Nepal: Change, Preservation, Prospects
2016
In the difficult circumstances of institutional discrimination and political pressure, the Tibetan minority in Nepal negotiate their identity with utmost communicative resourcefulness, tying their values to universal ethics. They resort to their spiritual heritage in their daily intercultural encounters, seeing it mostly as an essential mindset. Developing intercultural personhood through universalization does not challenge identity salience, if one’s culture is adhered to consciously. The respondents are optimistic about preserving their culture, provided the positive factors, such as community living and cultural education, persist. The obstacles are seen in materialistic influences, glob…
The effects of the English language on the cultural identity of Chinese university students
2011
Tutkielman tarkoituksena on selvittää kuinka englannin kieli on vaikuttanut kiinalaisten yliopistotason englannin pääaineopiskelijoiden kulttuuri-identiteettiin.
Introduction : Europe, Heritage and Memory-Dissonant Encounters and Explorations
2019
The introduction to Dissonant Heritages and Memories in Contemporary Europe theoretically grounds the book’s various problematizations of heritage and identity struggles in Europe today, including the heritage policies of the EU and other intergovernmental organizations, struggles over ethnographic and historical exhibitions, activist practices, and dissonant memories. By discussing these struggles and their problematizations, the introduction connects the book to a wide range of ongoing debates across the humanities and social sciences. At the same time, it discusses how convergences and divergences within and between the volume’s chapters foster new insights regarding the concepts of diss…
The Influence of Cultural Competence on the Interpretations of Territorial Identities in European Capitals of Culture
2014
Abstract The EU’s cultural initiative ‘the European Capital of Culture’ (ECOC) includes high identity political aims. It requires the designated cities to introduce and foster local, regional, and European cultural identities. In addition, the cities have used the designation as an opportunity to promote national cultural identity. Audiences of the ECOC events recognize and interpret different kinds of representations of territorial cultural identities from what the cities have to offer in culture. However, the contents of these interpretations vary drastically in the ECOCs. The article discusses whether the competence of interpreting the representations of territorial cultural identities i…
Immigrant artists' intercultural identity formation and development process through art making
2015
The present study examines how immigrant artists view their intercultural identity formation and development process through art making. The study is based on a theoretical foundation combining the concepts of identity, immigration and art. Art is commonly seen closely connected to one’s self and experiences, and therefore it is possible that great changes in life, such as immigration, have an influence on one’s art and vice versa. Because immigration is becoming more and more common, it is important to take into account also the emotional aspect of immigration through listening the thoughts and experiences of the people who are immigrants themselves to get more information about the ways p…
