The emergence and adaptive use of prestige in an online social learning task

AbstractPrestige-biased social learning occurs when individuals preferentially learn from others who are highly respected, admired, copied, or attended to in their group. This form of social learning is argued to reflect novel forms of social hierarchy in human societies, and, by providing an efficient short-cut to acquiring adaptive information, underpin the cumulative cultural evolution that has contributed to our species’ ecological success. The scale of human cooperation and conflict is outstanding and evolutionarily challenging to explain. Cooperative and hostile behaviours have deep evolutionary roots and adaptive functions. However, theoretical models differ in how they explain these functions. Thus, my thesis aims to empirically test functional predictions about human cooperation and conflict. These experiments use a behavioural ecological framework, and pay also attention to the effects of social and developmental environments. Bateman gradients from first principles

In 1948, Angus Bateman presented experiments and concepts that remain influential and debated in sexual selection. The Bateman gradient relates reproductive success to mate number, and Bateman presented this as the cause of intra-masculine selection. A deeper causal level was subsequently asserted: that the ultimate cause of sex differences in Bateman gradients is the sex difference in gamete numbers, an argument that remains controversial and without mathematical backup. Tässä pro gradu -tutkielmassa käsitellään tieteenfilosofisella otteella Robert Boydin ja Peter Richersonin teoriaa geenien ja kulttuurin rinnakkaisevoluutiosta. Tarkemmin kyse on teoriassa esiintyvien evoluutio -käsitteen eri merkitysten erittelystä ja selvittämisestä sekä edelleen kyseisten evoluution eri merkitysten avulla tuotetun ymmärryksen jäsentämisestä ja arvioimisesta. Leaps and bounds : towards an integrative theory of cultural evolution

Tutkimuksessa pyritään yhdistämään ajatus kulttuurista eräänlaisen luonnonvalinnan alaisena Dan Sperberin näkemyksien (1) kommunikaation taustadynamiikasta tarkoitet-tujen merkityksien päättelynä niiden kontekstisidonnaisen merkittävyyden perusteella ja (2) erilaisten käsityksien eri kohteista leviämisen suhteen. Tällaisen yhdentävän viiteke-hyksen turvin pyritään vastaamaan pätevästi Sperberin kritiikkiin koskien darwinilaisen luonnonvalinnan soveltamista kulttuurin ilmiöihin.
