Experiencing Authenticity at Alvar Aalto’s Experimental House

Experiences of authenticity are studied at Alvar Aalto’s Experimental House – today a modern house museum – which has gone through renovations and changes. Visitors were interviewed to find out how they feel about the authenticity of the place, if the changes affect their experience of authenticity, and if they share the same opinions. A review of the literature on the concept of authenticity is carried out and its implications for museum contexts is considered, and then the research questions are answered by analysing 30 interviews of visitors to the Experimental House.

The article discusses the concept of authenticity in relation to literary travel and other forms of media-induced travel. Focusing on the power of fictional narrative to draw members of the audience to locations associated with a story, the paper aims to find out what exactly visitors are expecting to find when journeying to locations with literary and media associations. Tutkimus on katsaus yhteen kulttuuriympäristön osaan, puutarhaan, matkailun nä-kökulmasta. Puutarhamatkailu on osa puutarhailmiötä. Kyseessä on tapaustutkimus, jossa puutarhamatkailu nähdään matkailuilmiön tutkittavana osana. Tutkimusaihetta lähestytään matkailun ja puutarhan tutkimuksen kautta. Vaikka puutarhaharrastus on lisääntynyt yleisen länsimaisen vaurastumisen myötä, puutarhat ovat yhä melko tuntematon osa rakennettua kulttuuriympäristöämme. Tutkimuksessa tarkastellaan kysymyksiä mitä on musiikkimatkailu ja minkälainen on musiikkimatkaili-ja, käyttäen aineistona kesällä 2007 Viitasaaren Musiikin aika -nusiikkifestivaalilla tehtyä kyselytutki-musta, joka pohjautui Timo Cantellin (1993) kesällä 1992 Musiikin aika -musiikkifestivaalilla tekemään kyselytutkimukseen. Vuoden 2007 ja 1992 tuloksia vertaillaan keskenään käyttäen viitekehyksenä ai-neistojen analysoinnissa Hughesin (2000) teoriaa matkailusta, johon sisältyy taidekokemus, the arts-related tourism ja matkailijasta, the arts-related tourist, jonka matkaan kuuluu taidekokemus.
