The present study investigates the phenomenon of host conformity pressure and its possible consequences on acculturation from immigrants’ perspective. The research is motivated by the discrepancies between results of previous studies on the topic, the relatively small amount of research about immigration in Finland, and the will to examine adaptation issues from an intercultural communication perspective. The study uses different adaptation theories, notably Berry’s (1997) model of acculturative strategies. This dissertation investigates expatriate IT workers located in Japan in the contexts of their acculturation and thinking about workplace and business negotiations. Case studies of individual actors supported by surveys were chosen as the methods to gather data leading to findings about how expatriates develop in Japan, including their ability to adjust, accept, and reject schemata about business management situations. Individuals were chosen as a unit of study because they are the key figures who decide the economic fate of companies. Tutkimuksessani olen selvittänyt, millaisia kotoutumiskokemuksia on perhesiteen perusteella Suomeen muuttaneilla pääkaupunkiseudulla asuvilla venäläistaustaisilla naisilla, jotka elävät tai ovat eläneet kaksikulttuurisessa liitossa, ja miten heidän käytännön kokemuksensa vastaavat hallinnon kotoutumistavoitteita ja kotouttamispolitiikkaa. Omakohtaisten kokemusten selvittämiseksi olen käyttänyt aineistonkeruumenetelmänä haastattelua. Haastattelin tutkimustani varten yhdeksää naista. Aineistooni kuuluu myös kotoutumiseen liittyviä lakeja ja poliittisia ohjelmia, joista olen johtanut kysymyksiä haastattelurunkooni.
