Pursuing decentralisation : regional cultural policies in Finland and Sweden

In both Finland and Sweden, decentralisation has traditionally been an essential cultural policy aim. This article explores how, by pursuing decentralisation, the regional jurisdictions have been presented with more possibilities to fulfil their purposes and in this way, gain legitimacy in cultural policy. Based on the analysis of political, legal, and administrative documents, three main periods of regional decentralisation in cultural policies are identified: regions as vehicles of welfare policy, regionalisation, and competitive regions. Identity tensions in dual career : the discursive construction of future selves by female Finnish judo athletes

To date, few studies have explored how changes in the practices, policies, and politics of sport and education may be implicated in how young athletes think about and plan for the future. Drawing on cultural praxis and feminist poststructuralist frameworks, this paper explores whether and how dual career (DC) policies and practices in Finland guide female judo athletes’ imaginings about their future. Discourse analysis was used to analyse interviews with three adolescent (aged 16) and three young adult (aged 20, 23, and 27) elite female judo athletes. ‘Life is team play’: social inclusion of people with intellectual disabilities in the context of Special Olympics

This article provides insights from an empirical study on the meaning of social inclusion for Finnish athletes with intellectual disabilities (ID) who participate in Special Olympics (SO). A further objective was to explore the athletes’ perceptions of the role SO has played in their lives regarding their personal experiences of social inclusion. Data were transcripts of five focus group interviews carried out with a total of 31 participants during the last SO World Winter Games in 2017. Associations between Sports Videogames and Physical Activity in Children

Abstract Objective: The aim of the study was to examine the associations of sports video gaming behaviour in the sociological concept of Physical Activity Relationships (PAR) and to see if sports video gaming differs by gender. Methods: A convenience sample of children between 11–12 years of age (n = 114) from three Finnish regions completed a questionnaire on perceptions of their video gaming and physical activity habits. Parenting culture(s): Ideal-parent beliefs across 37 countries

What is it to be “an ideal parent”? Does the answer differ across countries and social classes? To answer these questions in a way that minimizes bias and ethnocentrism, we used open-ended questions to explore ideal-parent beliefs among 8,357 mothers and 3,517 fathers from 37 countries. Leximancer Semantic Network Analysis was utilized to first determine parenting culture zones (i.e., countries with shared ideal-parent beliefs) and then extract the predominant themes and concepts in each culture zone. Reduced Peak Bone Mass in Young Adults with Low Motor Competence

Although suboptimal bone health has been reported in children and adolescents with low motor competence (LMC), it is not known whether such deficits are present at the time of peak bone mass. We examined the impact of LMC on bone mineral density (BMD) in 1043 participants (484 females) from the Raine Cohort Study. Participants had motor competence assessed using the McCarron Assessment of Neuromuscular Development at 10, 14, and 17 years, and a whole body dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry scan at 20 years. Tässä tutkielmassa perehdyn Émile Jaques-Dalcrozen kehittämään pedagogiikkaan ja sen taustalla oleviin ajatuksiin. Jaques-Dalcrozen vaikutus tämän päivän musiikki- ja musiikkiliikuntakasvatukseen on ollut merkittävä ja pyrin tällä tutkielmallani valaisemaan sen perusajatuksia. Kerron ensin Jaques-Dalcrozen henkilöhistoriasta, jonka jälkeen avaan termiä Dalcroze-pedagogiikka, joka tunnetaan myös nimellä eurytmiikka ja kerron tähän käsitteeseen liittyvistä kolmesta osa-alueesta. Lapselle liike on luontaisin tapa ilmentää musiikkia. Myös laulaminen ja oman äänen käyttö on läsnä lapsen elämässä pienestä pitäen. Koulun musiikintunnilla voisi hyödyntää lapsen luontaista intoa liikkua ja laulaa ja perustaa opetus niille. Tutkimukseni tarkoituksena on luoda toiminnallinen laulunopetuksen materiaalipaketti alakouluun ja testata sitä. Materiaalipakettini perustuu valtakunnallisen perusopetuksen opetussuunnitelman (2014) laulunopetuksen tavotteisiin ja sisältöihin ja uusimpiin musiikin oppimateriaaleihin.
