The Effects of Combined Same Session Aerobic and Resistance Training on Physical Performance in Coronary Artery Disease Patients : Protocol Comparison
2021
Aerobic training is included to cardiac rehabilitation programs together with resistance training. The effects of combined aerobic and resistance training performed in a same session with different protocols on peak aerobic capacity (VO2peak) and maximal dynamic strength (1RM: one repetition maximum) are not well known. We compared the effectiveness of two different combined aerobic and resistance training programs for 12 weeks performed three times in a week in stable Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) patients (n=30) who had previously performed aerobic training only. The patients were randomized to High Volume- Low Intensity Group (HLG) or Low Volume-High Intensity Group (LHG). Both groups pe…
Suoliston mikrobit ja fyysinen suorituskyky
2021
Suolistoamme asuttava miljardilukuinen mikrobiyhteisö osallistuu fysiologiaamme monin tavoin.
Effect of 12-month supervised, home-based physical exercise on functioning among persons with signs of frailty : Randomized Controlled Trial
2021
Objectives To investigate the effects of a 12-month home-based exercise program on functioning and falls among persons with signs of frailty. Design A randomized controlled trial with a 1:1 allocation Setting Home-based Participants Home-dwelling persons aged ≥65 years meeting at least one frailty phenotype criteria (n=300). Intervention 12-month, individually tailored, progressive and physiotherapist-supervised, physical exercise twice a week (n=150) vs. usual care (n=149). Main outcome Measures Functional Independence Measure (FIM), Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB), handgrip strength, instrumental activities of daily living (IADL), and self-reported falls and physical activity (o…
A school-based quasi-experimental intervention to improve students' motor competence and physical fitness
2022
Background Previous research has shown that school can be an influential context to promote students' physical activity engagement, physical fitness, and motor competence. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of a 5-month-long intervention program that aimed to increase students' motor competence and physical fitness during school days. Methods A quasi-experimental intervention design with pre- and post-tests was implemented. Altogether 325 Finnish Grade 5 (Mage = 11.26, SD = .33) students from five schools participated in the study. At the beginning of the study, students were divided into experimental and control groups on purpose. The intervention consisted of t…

Sotilas tarvitsee operatiivisessa työssään monipuolisesti fyysistä suorituskykyä ja nykyaikainen taistelukenttä edellyttääkin sotilailta sekä voimaa että kestävyyttä. Puolustusvoimien fyysisen koulutuksen tärkeimpänä tavoitteena on valmistaa sotilasta selviytymään omasta poikkeusolojen tehtävästään. nonPeerReviewed

Motives for competitive sports participation in masters track and field athletes : Impact of sociodemographic factors and competitive background
2022
Objectives Masters athletes due to their lifelong engagement in sport represent a unique group to study motivation for regular physical activity, but there is less scientific data on the sport motives in masters athletes. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the association of age, sex, education, nationality, competitive background and training amount with sport motives of masters track and field athletes. Methods 811 (254 women) athletes aged 35–89 years participated in European Veterans Athletics Championships in the year of 2000. Sport motives were assessed with a questionnaire and categorized into1) well-being, 2) competitive and performance 3) health and fitness motives. R…
Neuromuscular and hormonal adaptations to resistance training : special effects of time of day of training
2009
The majority of the processes in human physiology and behaviour exhibit daily variation. Neuromuscular performance has been repeatedly shown to be lower in the morning hours compared to the rest of the day. However, the scientific data available provide somewhat conflicting results on the origin and mechanisms of diurnal variation in maximum strength and power. In addition, very limited scientific evidence exists as to whether this diurnal variation can be diminished by time-of-day-specific resistance training. The present study was designed to obtain more information on the mechanisms behind both diurnal variation in muscle strength and power, and the mechanisms behind adaptations to time-o…
Self-reported Reasons for Changes in Performance of Everyday Activities During a 2-Year Multidisciplinary Multiple Sclerosis Rehabilitation
2022
Background: Few multidisciplinary rehabilitation studies with a heterogeneous design have focused on people with multiple sclerosis (MS). This study compared subjective-reported changes in performance and satisfaction with daily activities among moderately and severely disabled people with MS during a 2-year, multidisciplinary, group-based, outpatient rehabilitation program comprising education in self-management and compensatory techniques, exercise, and guided peer support. Methods: Thirty-eight adults with moderate disability (Expanded Disability Status Scale [EDSS] score of 4.0–5.5, 74% women, mean age of 48 years) and 41 persons with severe disability (EDSS 6.0–8.5, 63% women, mean age…
