OpenQuest: Designing a Motivational Framework for MOOCs Instruction

This paper introduces an innovative motivational framework for Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) instructional design coined as Open Quest Framework (OpenQuest). OpenQuest aims to improve learning and user engagement in MOOCs by drawing lessons from the success of quest-based initiatives, gamified web platforms, and massive-multiplayer online games (MMOs). The framework is grounded on established motivational theories such as the Self-Determination Theory and Situated Motivational Affordance. Tutkimukseni tarkoitus on selvittää, voiko multimodaalisten menetelmien käyttäminen auttaa nuoria saavuttamaan inspiraation ja luovuuden tilan sekä edistää heidän tarinoiden kirjoittamisen harrastamistaan. Yhdistän tutkimuksessa digitaalisuuden ja luovan kirjoittamisen suunnittelemalla multimodaalisuutta hyödyntävän luovan kirjoittamisen verkkokurssin mallin ja toteuttamalla testikurssin varhaisnuorten ryhmälle. Aineistonani ovat tutkimukseni kirjallisena osuutena toimiva työpäiväkirja ja siihen kirjaamani havainnot tutkimuskohteesta sekä kurssille osallistujien kanssa eri kanavien kautta tapahtunut vuorovaikutus. Evaluation of Student Teachers’ Perceived Quantitative Workload and Usefulness of an On-line Elementary Science Education Course Unit

We have designed a 1 ECTS on-line science pedagogy unit as a part of a 6 ECTS science education course for elementary school student teachers. To improve the unit, we asked 169 participants to estimate their use of time and the usefulness of the themes and contents in it. We analysed the responses in the framework of students’ perceived workload. The Basics of School Science was perceived as the most useful section, followed by Science Teaching and Learning Methods and Basics of Science and Scientific Knowledge in Schools, respectively. Tässä artikkelissa kuvataan verkko-opiskelussa rakentuvaa luottamusta verkkokurssilla opiskelevan opiskelijan näkökulmasta. Tutkimusaineistona on Jyväskylän yliopiston avoimen yliopiston verkkokursseille osallistuneille opiskelijoille tehty kysely (n = 68). Tutkimuksessa selvitettiin ensin faktorianalyysin avulla verkko-opiskelussa rakentuvan luottamuksen edellytyksiä ja luottamusriskejä. Luottamuksen edellytyksiä ovat opiskeluryhmän turvallisuus ja yhteisöllisyys, verkkoympäristön selkeys ja helppokäyttöisyys sekä opettajan suunnittelutyö, ammattitaito ja läsnäolo.
