Michel Foucault (1926-1984) is not really known as a thinker of music, or more generally, as a thinker of the voice, of the sound, of audition and listening. Often, one comes up with the portrait of Foucault as a visualist of some sort, one who either was not interested in the other sensory modalities, or at least, did not have much, if anything, to say about them. Accumulation of sensory difficulties predicts fear of falling in older women

Objectives: To explore whether the accumulation of sensory difficulties predicts fear of falling (FOF), and whether the traits correlate with each other regardless of familial factors. Methods: Self-reported hearing, vision and balance difficulties, and FOF were assessed using structured questionnaires at the baseline and after a 3-year follow-up in 63- to 76-year-old women (n = 434). Results: Among the women without FOF at baseline (n = 245), 41% reported FOF at follow-up. Increasing numbers of sensory difficulties at baseline predicted higher incidence of FOF. Tutkimukseni käsittelee ensimmäisenä Suomessa koulun musiikinopettajien melualtistusta ja kuulovaurioriskiä. Aihe on tärkeä ja ajankohtainen, sillä hiljattain on havahduttu siihen, että musiikki- ja muu vapaa-ajan melu aiheuttaa pysyviä kuulovammoja jo nuorissakin ihmisissä. Lisäksi sivuaviin ja ulkomaisiin tutkimuksiin perustuen oli syytä epäillä, että musiikinopettajien työperäinen melualtistus saattaa olla huolestuttavaa tasoa. Melu voi tarkoittaa paitsi mitattavissa olevaa äänitasoa, myös yksilön subjektiivista kokemusta jostakin äänestä häiritsevänä. Siksi keskeisiä tutkimuskysymyksiäkin oli kaksi.
