Background Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common skin cancer in the Caucasian population. Eighty per cent of BCCs are located on the head and neck area. Clinically ill‐defined BCCs often represent histologically aggressive subtypes, and they can have subtle subclinical extensions leading to recurrence and the need for re‐excisions. Objectives The aim of this pilot study was to test the feasibility of a hyperspectral imaging system (HIS) in vivo in delineating the preoperatively lateral margins of ill‐defined BCCs on the head and neck area. WhatsApp iconology: narratives on in-app photographic practices in (transnational) family communication

Sharing photographs and photo-chatting are common practices in doing family at a distance. This study looks at the processes of the production and circulation of photographs within the family network, analysing participants’ narratives about their image-based communication in WhatsApp. The data was collected as an ethnographic enquiry into the digitally mediated (transnational) family communication of five Polish women and their children living in Finland. Ilmakuvausjournalismin uudet ulottuvuudet: Drooneista satelliitteihin -tutkimus- ja kehityshankkeen (DroSat) loppuraportissa kerrotaan projektin tärkeimmät tulokset. Hanke toteutettiin vuosien 2020–2021 aikana Jyväskylän yliopiston kieli- ja viestintätieteen laitoksella Media-alan tutkimussäätiön rahoituksella. Muun muassa koronapandemian takia alunperin yksivuotiseksi tarkoitettu hanke venyi käytännössä monivuotiseksi. Tutkimusaineiston kerääminen, live-etäkoulutuksen pilotointi sekä ensimmäinen tutkimusjulkaisu ajoittuivat vuoteen 2020. Tutkimus on kulttuurifilosofinen ja kulttuurintutkimuksellinen väitöskirja aineellisen artefaktin ongelmasta ja filosofinen tutkimus aineellisen mieltämisen ehdoista. Ihmistekoisen statuksen uudelleen arvioinnin pohjalta kehitän siinä uuden tavan ajatella aineellista ja ruumiillista. Historiallisesti suhteellisen nuoreen artefaktin käsitteeseen on tullut materiaalisuuksien kasvun myötä sen painon sivuuttavaa itsestäänselvyyttä, kuten tapahtui ikivanhalle olemisen käsitteelle Martin Heideggerin käänteentekevän huomion mukaan. My dissertation deals with the most important female figures of the Finnish national epic New Kalevala (1849): Aino, Louhi, Lemminkäinen’s mother and Marjatta. The epic was compiled by Elias Lönnrot (1802–1884) from Karelian and Finnish oral folklore. My reading leans on the intuitive night side of knowledge, which Lönnrot (1832) introduced as a counterpart to the day side of rational knowledge. To illustrate the logic of the night side of knowledge, I analyse Lönnrot as both a collector of oral folklore and a compiler of a work of epic poetry.
