Higher education teachers’ descriptions of their own learning: a quantitative perspective

In this large-scale study, higher education teachers’ (n = 1028) descriptions of their own learning are examined with quantitative analyses. The study follows up an earlier qualitative study that, using a phenomenographic approach, identified four different ways in which teachers at Finnish universities of applied sciences described their own learning. The purpose of the present study was to find out how teachers’ descriptions were divided into the categories formed in the previous study and to examine whether teachers’ descriptions of their learning differ according to their position, gender and age. Tämän pro gradu -tutkielman tarkoituksena oli selvittää kavereiden yhteyttä lasten ja nuorten liikunta-aktiivisuuteen ja urheiluseurassa harrastamiseen. Tutkielmassa tarkasteltiin viides-, seitsemäs- ja yhdeksäsluokkalaisten lasten ja nuorten liikuntakäyttäytymistä sekä sitä, millainen yhteys heidän kavereillaan siihen oli. Tutkimus perustui maaliskuussa 2016 kerättyyn valtakunnallisen LIITU-tutkimuksen aineistoon. LIITU-tutkimuksen aineisto kerättiin sähköisellä kyselylomakkeella ja vastaajia oli yhteensä 5586. The research topic of this dissertation is the press of the Social Democratic Party of Finland (SDP) from the March revolution of 1917 in Russia to the end of the Finnish Civil War in the spring of 1918. Under research are 16 party papers, which, however, were not owned by the party, and therefore neither under its guidance nor control. The papers' owners, local working class organizations, elected the editors-in-chief, who often held central posts in the party. In this way they could use their relatively independent positions to further their political views in their editorials. Hence, understanding the evolution of key energetic traits, such as basal metabolic rate (BMR), in natural populations is central for understanding life-history evolution and ecological processes. Here we used quantitative genetic analyses to study evolutionary potential of BMR in two insular populations of the house sparrow (Passer domesticus). Limited resources force individuals to trade-off between life-history traits. A vast diversity of life-history strategies, which optimally combine life history traits, can be found. Knowledge of the genetic basis of this phenotypic variation is key to understanding evolutionary processes. I approached life-history evolution by estimating quantitative genetic parameters for a set of life-history traits in the bank vole (Myodes glareolus).
