Discussions revolving around cyborgs seldom include aesthetics, let alone propose aesthetics as an inextricable part of the phenomenon of the cyborg. Rather, the term “cyborg”, a contraction of “cybernetic organism”, evokes a figure of the (hu)man- machine. In the field of social and political sciences, the cyborg is designated a human-machine hybrid, a metaphor of humans becoming machinelike, or a portrait of (political) agency in an era of high technology. Ihmiskehon representaatio hybridikontekstissa : seksuaalisuuden ilmentymisestä satyyrista kyborgiin

Tutkimus käsittelee hybridihahmoisuutta keskittyen kolmeen suurempaan kokonaisuuteen, jotka ovat ihmisen ja eläimen hybridi, ihmisen ja koneen hybridi sekä ihmisen ja ihmisen hybridi. Ihmisen ja eläimen yhdistelmähahmojen esimerkkeinä toimivat muunmuassa kentaurit ja keijut. Tässä osiossa pohditaan näiden yhdistelmähahmojen myyttistä alkuperää, sekä sitä, mitä nämä hahmot symboloivat mytologisella tasolla. Ihmisen ja koneen hybridi osiossa tutkitaan etenkin nykyihmisen suhdetta koneisiin ja sitä, missä kulkee koneen ja ihmisen raja.
