How a glass-processing SME developed its big data competence

2021

This chapter demonstrates how Glaston, a glass-processing SME, has overcome the constraints of limited funds and limited technical know-how to develop its big data competence. While describing Glaston's big data journey, the study focuses on three types of dynamic capabilities that have played a crucial role in the building of Glaston's big data competence. First, the combination of market listening and business imagination has enabled Glaston to monitor technological developments in the industry and adapt them to big data use cases that are relevant for the company. Second, open innovation has allowed Glaston to complement internal resources and co-create big data initiatives with external…

Suitability of Phytosterols Alongside Fatty Acids as Chemotaxonomic Biomarkers for Phytoplankton

2016

The composition and abundance of phytoplankton is an important factor defining ecological status of marine and freshwater ecosystems. Chemotaxonomic markers (e.g., pigments and fatty acids) are needed for monitoring changes in a phytoplankton community and to know the nutritional quality of seston for herbivorous zooplankton. Here we investigated the suitability of sterols along with fatty acids as chemotaxonomic markers using multivariate statistics, by analyzing the sterol and fatty acid composition of 10 different phytoplankton classes including altogether 37 strains isolated from freshwater lakes. We were able to detect a total of 47 fatty acids and 29 sterols in our phytoplankton sampl…

Tracking Polariton Relaxation with Multiscale Molecular Dynamics Simulations

2019

When photoactive molecules interact strongly with confined light modes in optical cavities, new hybrid light–matter states form. They are known as polaritons and correspond to coherent superpositions of excitations of the molecules and of the cavity photon. The polariton energies and thus potential energy surfaces are changed with respect to the bare molecules, such that polariton formation is considered a promising paradigm for controlling photochemical reactions. To effectively manipulate photochemistry with confined light, the molecules need to remain in the polaritonic state long enough for the reaction on the modified potential energy surface to take place. To understand what determine…

Construction of Chimeric Dual-Chain Avidin by Tandem Fusion of the Related Avidins

2011

BackgroundAvidin is a chicken egg-white protein with high affinity to vitamin H, also known as D-biotin. Many applications in life science research are based on this strong interaction. Avidin is a homotetrameric protein, which promotes its modification to symmetrical entities. Dual-chain avidin, a genetically engineered avidin form, has two circularly permuted chicken avidin monomers that are tandem-fused into one polypeptide chain. This form of avidin enables independent modification of the two domains, including the two biotin-binding pockets; however, decreased yields in protein production, compared to wt avidin, and complicated genetic manipulation of two highly similar DNA sequences i…

Repeatability and sensitivity of passive mechanical stiffness measurements in the triceps surae muscle‐tendon complex

2021

Measurements of muscle-tendon unit passive mechanical properties are often used to illustrate acute and chronic responses to a training stimulus. The purpose of this study was to quantify the inter-session repeatability of triceps surae passive stiffness measurements in athletic and non-athletic populations, with the view to discussing its usefulness both as a muscle-tendon profiling tool and a control measure for studies with multiple data collection sessions. The study also aimed to observe the effects of quiet standing on passive stiffness parameters. Twenty-nine men (10 cyclists, nine triathletes, 10 controls) visited the laboratory on three separate occasions, where passive stiffness t…

An effectual approach to executing dynamic capabilities under unexpected uncertainty

2022

This study investigates how business-to-business (B2B) firms navigate contexts of unexpected uncertainty. Building on the theories of effectuation and dynamic capabilities, the study develops a model that highlights how effectual decision-making logic is manifested in the activities B2B firms employ to sense and seize new opportunities and threats and transform existing business operations. The qualitative data were collected in two phases (before and after the COVID-19 outbreak) and consisted of 24 interviews with 13 B2B firms. The findings demonstrate a strong reliance on managers' effectual decision-making in situations of unexpected uncertainty and provide a set of key activities that h…

With great power comes great responsibilities – Examining platform-based mechanisms and institutional trust in rideshare services

2023

From the perspective of female passengers, much remains unknown about institutional or platform trust and the sharing economy. The present study was conducted in an emerging economy context to comprehend the significance of institutional trust. The study aimed to develop a dynamic theoretical model incorporating the perceived effectiveness of platform-based institutional structures (PEPIS) as a dependent variable in sharing economy platforms, examine the antecedents of PEPIS and determine how PEPIS affects female passengers' trust in the institution or platform. Different strata of female passengers were targeted using a quota-cum-purposive sampling method. In total, 413 useable responses t…

Helix Inversion Controlled by Molecular Motors in Multistate Liquid Crystals.

2020

Unravelling the rules of molecular motion is a contemporary challenge that promises to support the development of responsive materials and is likely to enhance the understanding of functional motion. Advances in integrating light‐driven molecular motors in soft matter have led to the design and realization of chiral nematic (cholesteric) liquid crystals that can respond to light with modification of their helical pitch, and also with helix inversion. Under illumination, these chiral liquid crystals convert from one helical geometry to another. Here, a series of light‐driven molecular motors that feature a rich configurational landscape is presented, specifically which involves three stable …

Viscoelastic properties of the Achilles tendon in vivo

2013

It has been postulated that human tendons are viscoelastic and their mechanical properties time-dependent. Although Achilles tendon (AT) mechanics are widely reported, there is no consensus about AT viscoelastic properties such as loading rate dependency or hysteresis, in vivo. AT force-elongation characteristics were determined from 14 subjects in an ankle dynamometer at different loading rates using motion capture assisted ultrasonography. AT stiffness and elongation were determined between 10 – 80% of maximum voluntary contraction (MVC) force at fast and slow loading rates. As subjects were unable to consistently match the target unloading rate in the slow condition, AT hysteresis was on…
