Examining the side effects of organizational Internet monitoring on employees
2020
PurposeInternet monitoring in organizations can be used to monitor risks associated with Internet usage and information systems in organizations, such as employees' cyberloafing behavior and information security incidents. Extant research has mainly discussed the effect of Internet monitoring in achieving the targeted goals (e.g. mitigating cyberloafing behavior and information security incidents), but little attention has been paid to the possible side effects of Internet monitoring. Drawing on affective events theory, the authors attempt to reveal that Internet monitoring may cause side effects on employees' Internet usage policy satisfaction, intrinsic work motivation and affective organ…
Rolling or Scrolling? The Effect of Content Type on Habitual Use of Facebook
2020
The paper investigates how content type (i.e., hedonic and utilitarian content) is related to satisfaction, habitual use, use intensity and discontinued use intentions in the context of social media services. The research model was empirically tested using a survey study (n = 142) that was conducted among Facebook users. The results show that hedonic content is a strong predictor of habitual use of and satisfaction with Facebook. In turn, utilitarian content has a positive effect on satisfaction; however, it does not significantly affect habitual use. Additionally, habit affects use intensity more than satisfaction but has no significant effect on discontinued use intention. These results s…
Individual and shared digital repertoires : older adults managing digital services
2023
The rise of public and other non-recreational digital services is based on the idea of catering to the daily needs of the citizens cost-efficiently and with ease. Previous research has approached the use of digital services mainly from the perspective of an individual, while the significance of shared practices of use has attracted only a little attention. In this article, we (1) examine the incentives and limitations associated with the use of non-recreational digital services, which either encourage or discourage older adults to use them. Based on the first question, we then ask (2) how older adults in this study manage those non-recreational digital services they have chosen to use. Our …
Scrum- ja XP-käytänteiden käyttö : haastattelututkimus
2011
Tässä tutkielmassa tutkitaan kahden ketterän menetelmän, Scrumin ja XP:n, käytänteiden käyttöä suomalaisissa ohjelmistoalan yrityksissä. Tarkoituksena on selvittää, mitä käytänteitä käytetään ja millä tavalla, millaisia kokemuksia niistä on saatu ja miten kokemukset vertautuvat aiempien tutkimusten tuloksiin. Tutkimus koostuu kahdesta osasta. Ensimmäisessä osassa on rakennettu työlle ketterää lähestymistapaa, ketteriä menetelmiä ja käytänteitä koskeva käsitteellinen perusta ja esitellään alan aiempia tuloksia. Toinen osa on toteutettu puolistrukturoituna haastattelututkimuksena, johon osallistui kuusi haastateltavaa neljästä suomalaisesta yrityksestä. Tutkimuksessa todettiin, että aikaisemp…

Sanakirjojen käyttöä pidetään kulttuurissamme perustaitona, jonka odotetaan ja oletetaan sujuvan kaikilta. Todellisuudessa taidot käyttää sanakirjoja – jo oikean sanakirjan valitsemisesta käyttötarkoitukseensa alkaen – voivat olla hyvinkin puutteellisia, eikä sanakirjojen käyttöä yleisesti opeteta koulussa. Kieliopinnoissa sanakirjat nousevat entistä tärkeämmäksi; asianmukaiset käyttötaidot ovat tärkeä osa kaikkien kieliasiantuntijoiden ammattitaitoa eivätkä suinkaan pelkän kielenkääntäjän etuoikeus. Tässä pro gradu –tutkielmassa perehdytään maisteriopintovaiheen loppupuolella olevien saksan- ja ruotsinopiskelijoiden apuvälineiden käyttöön tekstin tuottamisen yhteydessä. Tutkimuksen tarkoit…
Factors inhibiting the adoption intention of digital payment platforms
2022
The aim of this study was to investigate how specific functional and psychological barriers can lead people to negatively perceive the value of mobile payment platforms, which could serve as an obstacle to their intention to adopt or continue using such platform. Unlike the plethora of studies that have examined the adoption of digital technologies, systems, and applications, in this study, we investigated the consumers’ resistance to digital payment platforms and the other barriers to the consumers’ adoption of such. The data were collected from Spain using a survey instrument. A total of 217 usable responses were collected and analyzed using the SmartPLS application. Our major findings su…
The role of age and digital competence on the use of online health and social care services: A cross-sectional population-based survey
2022
Objective Online health and social care services are getting widespread which increases the risk that less advantaged groups may not be able to access these services resulting in digital exclusion. We examined the combined effects of age and digital competence on the use of online health and social care services. Methods We used a large representative population-based sample of 4495 respondents from Finland. Paper-based self-assessment questionnaire with an online response option was mailed to participants. The associations were analyzed using survey weighted logistic regression, exploring potential non-linear effects of age and controlling for potential sex differences. Results Higher age,…
The utilization of primary healthcare services among frail older adults – findings from the Helsinki Birth Cohort Study
2022
Abstract Background The impact of frailty on primary healthcare service use, especially general practice office visits and remote contacts, is currently unknown. Further, little is known about the association of frailty with physiotherapy contacts. Methods We examined the utilization of primary healthcare services among 1064 participants from the Helsinki Birth Cohort Study between the years 2013 and 2017. Frailty was assessed based on Fried’s frailty criteria at mean age of 71.0 (2.7 SD) years in clinical examinations between the years 2011 and 2013. General practice office visits and remote contacts, the total number of general practice contacts, physiotherapy contacts, and the total numb…
What technical devices/platforms are used most by Citizen Scientists in their projects?
2021
Of the 12 different tools and platforms that are used in citizen science activities, the top three were websites, smartphones and databases. Respondents to a survey conducted by the CS Track project indicated that they used technology primarily for gathering scientific data and knowledge as well as for communication and dissemination of information with other enthusiasts and researchers. nonPeerReviewed
Personal use of technology at work : a literature review and a theoretical model for understanding how it affects employee job performance
2021
Employee personal use of technology at work (PUTW)—defined as employees’ activities using organisational or personal IT resources for non-work-related purposes while at work—is increasingly common in organisations. Our review of existing PUTW studies (n = 137) suggests that previous studies widely discussed PUTW outcomes, antecedents, and policies. The literature review also indicates that previous studies have proposed opposing viewpoints regarding the effect of PUTW on employee job performance, but few studies offered empirical evidence. Consequently, the conditions under which PUTW can increase or decrease employee job performance have not been discussed. We develop a theoretical model (…
