French Engineering Graduates in Corporate R & D : Is it worthwhile ?

2008

08010 - 14 p.; At the beginning of the 1990s, Beltramo, Bourdon and Paul presented a report for the French Commissariat au Plan on the prospect for the labour market for scientists, and other papers, which showed earnings differences between engineering graduates performing tasks in R&D or not (the first ones receiving 7% less than the others, other parameters taken into consideration). The objective of this paper is to assess to what extent, 15 years later, these results, which indicated lower earnings for researchers, is still valid. The data used in this study is similar to that in our former work. The data is generated from the survey launched each year (each two years until 2002) by th…

2004

In France, as in many other OECD countries, a sharp increase in the number of Ph.D. graduates in S&E fields from the mid-1980s to the mid-1990s was followed by a decrease in the enrolments in Ph.D. studies. Important transformations in the innovation processes were also observed on the same period. Our hypothesis is that we assist to the emergence of an intermediate scientific labour market between the traditional academic sector and the private research sector. A detailed analysis of the production processes of scientists and of the scientific careers of young scientists is first carried out in the perspective of labour economics. Then, in the perspective of the economics of innovation and…

Does family of origin make a difference in occupational outcomes?

2022

Disadvantages faced by parents adversely affect their children’s chances of success in the labour market. We study the influence of intergenerational transmission of parental socio-economic background on the educational attainment and occupational outcome of children, also considering gender differences. To tackle such a complex system of relationships across the outcome variables (both exogenous and endogenous), we adopt a path analysis model. In particular, we study the intergenerational transmission of disadvantage using the innovative and rich AD SILC database, which shows the evolution of occupational outcomes over eight years (measured by wages in 2011 and 2018). Our findings indicate…

The essay examines the complex issue of the division of powers between the State and the Regions according to Title V of the Constitution concerning health and safety at workplace. This division between the center and the periphery has been subject to a limited review by doctrine and jurisprudence expecially focusing on the regulation of labour market. The Author describes a multilevel system characterized by the presence of national and regional sources collective bargaining and codes of conduct. On the basis of a reconstruction of the regulatory framework and the judicial statements the paper proposes a dynamic reading of the relationship between center and periphery in which the axis of the system remains however anchored to the national jurisdiction along with important regulatory issues left to the regional legislation.Settore IUS/07 - Diritto Del Lavoro
