Inhibition of liver trans-sulphuration pathway by propargylglycine mimics gene expression changes found in the mammary gland of weaned lactating rats…

2003

In the lactatingmammary gland, weaning produces mitochondrial cytochrome c release and nuclear DNA fragmentation, as determined by gel electrophoresis. This is followed by a significant decrease in lactation. Weaning for 2 h produces an early induction of the tumour suppressor/transcription factor p53, whereas the oncoprotein c-Jun and c-Jun N-terminal kinase are elevated after 24 h of weaning when compared with controls. The expression of p21cip1 and p27kip1, cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitors, was significantly higher in weaned rats when compared with control lactating rats. All the changes mentioned above also happen in the lactatingmammary gland when propargylglycine, an inhibitor of th…

Determination of 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin in goat milk and tissues by glass capillary gas chromatography and medium resolution mass fragme…

1981

Abstract An analytical method has been developed for the study of the elimination of 2,3,7,8-tetrachlodoribenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) by lactation and its determination in various tissues of goat. The method is based on the alkaline hydrolysis of milk, liver, fat, muscle, blood, faeces and urine samples, extraction with n-hexane, treatment with sulphuric acid-saturated silica gel, chromatographic clean-up on silica gel and alumina micro-columns, and glass capillary gas chromatography—medium resolution mass fragmenography (resolution 2000). 1,2,3,4-Tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin is used as the internal standard, the concentration of TCDD being determined from the calibration curve calculated from the…

Oxidative damage to mitochondrial DNA and glutathione oxidation in apoptosis: studiesin vivoandin vitro

1999

Free radicals may be involved in apoptosis although this is the subject of some controversy. Furthermore, the source of free radicals in apoptotic cells is not certain. The aim of this study was to elucidate the role of oxidative stress in the induction of apoptosis in serum-deprived fibroblast cultures and in weaned lactating mammary glands as in vitro and in vivo experimental models, respectively. Oxidative damage to mtDNA is higher in apoptotic cells than in controls. Oxidized glutathione (GSSG) levels in mitochondria from lactating mammary gland are also higher in apoptosis. There is a direct relationship between mtDNA damage and the GSSG/reduced glutathione (GSH) ratio. Furthermore, wh…

Geographical separation and physiology drive differentiation of microbial communities of two discrete populations of the bat Leptonycteris yerbabuenae

2020

In this paper, we explore how two discrete and geographically separated populations of the lesser long‐nosed bat (Leptonycteris yerbabuenae)—one in central and the other in the Pacific region of Mexico—differ in their fecal microbiota composition. Considering the microbiota–host as a unity, in which extrinsic (as food availability and geography) or intrinsic factors (as physiology) play an important role in the microbiota composition, we would expect differentiation in the microbiota of two geographically separated populations. The Amplicon Sequences Variants (ASVs) of the V4 region of the 16s rRNA gene from 68 individuals were analyzed using alpha and beta diversity metrics. We obtained a …

Effects of docosahexaenoic acid and methylmercury on child's brain development due to consumption of fish by Finnish mother during pregnancy: A proba…

2011

Abstract Fish contains both beneficial substances e.g. docosahexaenoic acids but also harmful compounds e.g. methylmercury. Importantly, the health effects caused by these two substances can be evaluated in one common end point, intelligence quotient (IQ), providing a more transparent analysis. We estimated health effects of maternal fish consumption on child’s central nervous system by creating a model with three alternative maternal fish consumption scenarios (lean fish, fatty fish, and current fish consumption). Additionally, we analyzed impacts of both regular fish consumption and extreme fish consumption habits. At the individual level, the simulated net effects were small, encompassin…

Application of the Wood model to lactation curves of Comisana sheep

1997

Abstract Ninety-two ewes of the Comisana breed were used in a study to verify the forecasting capacity of the mathematical model proposed by Wood for fitting sheep data, and to evaluate the effect of the environmental factors affecting the parameters of the lactation curve. The Wood model underestimated the total lactation milk production with an error margin of 12.2 ± 7.8 kg of milk corresponding to 10.9 ± 6.6%. There was a strong influence of order of lambing × lambing season interaction on the lactation parameters. The curves for the winter lambing ewes demonstrated a higher peak production than autumn lambing ewes (1728.4 vs. 1082.6 g, P ≤ 0.05 for the second lambing ewes and 1772.8 vs.…

Biomonitoring of glyphosate and AMPA in the urine of Spanish lactating mothers

2021

The objectives of this study were to evaluate the urinary levels of Glyphosate (Gly) and its metabolite aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA) in Spanish breastfeeding mothers (n = 97), to identify the main predictors of exposure and to perform a risk assessment. Urine samples were analyzed using a method based on solid phase extraction and liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) determination. The developed method showed limits of quantification of 0.1 μg/L for both analytes. The detection frequencies (DFs) were 54% for Gly and 60% for AMPA, with geometric means (GMs) of 0.12 μg/L and 0.14 μg/L, respectively. In the statistical analysis, no relationship was found between the u…

EFFECT OF CHANGE OF CAGE AND/OR 44H MOTHER-LITTER SEPARATION ON PRODUCTIVITY OF NON-RECEPTIVE LACTATING RABBIT DOES. PRELIMINARY INVESTIGATION

2010

[EN] The effects of three different bio-stimulation methods, namely change of cage (CC), 44-hour mother-litter separation (MLS) and a combination of the two (CCMLS), for inducing oestrus in nonreceptive lactating does, were compared to the peñormance of receptive lactating does (RO). From March to July, 215 lactating does were taken to males for mating on day 9 after kindling. The 155 RO immediately mated. The does refusing to mate were divided in a balanced manner based body weight and parity and subjected to one of the three bio-stimulations. Receptivity in MLS does (72.7%) was higher than in ce (50.0%) and CCMLS groups (55.5%), and appeared more frequently (45.5%) on day 11, just after t…

Depletion of delta 9 desaturase (EC 1.14.99.5) activity in lactating rat during protein restriction.

2000

The effects of protein restriction on the activity of delta9 desaturase (EC 1.14.99.5) were investigated in lactating rats. A control group was fed a balanced diet (20% casein) for 14 days, whereas the experimental groups were fed a low-protein diet (8% casein), supplemented with or without L-methionine (0.4%), for 14 days. The enzyme activity was measured by incubations of hepatic microsomal pellets with (1-14C) stearic acid. Results showed a decreased delta9 desaturase activity, after 2,7 and 14 days of depleted diet, of -50, -40 and -33% respectively, compared with control. The supplementation of the low-protein diet with 0.4% methionine, which favours food consumption as well as growth,…
