Physical activity history and end-of-life hospital and long-term care
2009
Background: Little is known about the early predictors of need for care in late life. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether physical activity from midlife onward was associated with hospital and long-term care in the last year of life. Methods: We studied a decedent population of 846 persons aged 66–98 years at death, who, on average 5.8 years prior to death, had participated in an interview about their current and earlier physical activity. Data on the use of care in the last year of life are register-based data and complete. Results: Men needed on average 96 days (SD 7.0) and women 138 days (SD 6.2) of inpatient care in the last year of life. Among men, the risk for all-cau…
Mobility limitations and cognitive deficits as predictors of institutionalization among community-dwelling older people.
2006
Purpose: Mobility limitations and cognitive disorders have often been observed as risks for institutionalization. However, their combined effects on risk of institutionalization among initially community-dwelling older people have been less well reported. Design: A prospective cohort study with 10-year surveillance on institutionalization. Subjects: Study population (n = 476) consisted of 75- and 80-year-old people who were community-dwelling, had not been diagnosed with dementia, and participated in tests on walking speed and cognitive capacity at a research centre. Measures: Cognitive capacity was measured with th…
Models of long-term care use among older people with disabilities in Taiwan: institutional care, community care, live-in migrant care and family care
2014
The four main models of long-term care (LTC) for older people in Taiwan are institutional care, community & home-based care, live-in migrant care, and family care. This study aims to examine the factors associated with the four above-mentioned LTC models, using the Andersen model as its framework for analysis. Data were from the 2005 National Taiwanese Health Interview Survey (n=30,680) and in this study 592 over-65-year-old persons who require personal care in daily life were included. The findings showed that the majority of older people with care needs lived with family and were cared only by their family. The second largest group were those older people who were cared by migrant care wo…

Physical activity as a predictor of disability and social and health service use in older people
2009
The purpose of the study was to investigate whether functional status and physical activity history predict all-cause hospital and long-term care use among older community-dwelling people. In addition, the effects of physical activity counseling on instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) disability and home care service use in an older sedentary population were studied.Data from three larger studies were used. The Evergreen project cohorts born in 1910 and 1914 consisted of 617 persons. From the Evergreen project interview data on individuals born in 1908-1923, a decedent population was investigated (n=846). Screening and Counseling for Physical Activity and Mobility among Older Peop…

Masennus ikäihmisten pitkäaikaisen laitoshoidon tarpeen ennustajana
2013
Masennuksen on todettu heikentävän ikäihmisten elämänlaatua ja toimintakykyä, mutta se jää usein havaitsematta ja siksi myös hoitamatta. Vakavaa masennusta on todettu esiintyvän noin 1–4 %:lla ikäihmisistä. Ikäihmisten määrän lisääntyessä myös pitkäaikaisen laitoshoidon tarve kasvaa. Ikäihmisten pitkäaikaiseen laitoshoitoon sijoittumisen riskitekijöitä on selvitetty useissa tutkimuksissa, mutta masennuksen yhteyttä laitoshoitoon sijoittumiseen on tutkittu melko vähän. Tutkimukseni tarkoituksena oli selvittää, ennustaako lähtötilanteessa todettu masennus pitkäaikaiseen laitoshoitoon sijoittumista yhdeksän vuoden ja neljän kuukauden seurannan aikana 55–80-vuotiailla ikäihmisillä. Tutkimuksess…
The treatment of severe self-injurious behavior through sensory stimulation: A case report
2016
Self-injurious behavior of an institutionalized man with profound intellectual disability was treated with a daily 15-min sensory stimulation program, which consisted of moving the arms and hands of the participant, swinging his body, and massage. The frequency of self-injurious behavior was measured in 10-min sessions. Using a reversal design, it was shown that sensory stimulation decreased the participant’s self-hitting behavior significantly, both in intensity and in frequency. Sensory stimulation is recommended for use in those cases in which functional analysis has shown that self-injury may be reinforced by its sensory consequences.
