Pelkkä ekologinen kompensaatio ei takaa ekologisesti kestävää maankäyttöä

2022

Uudistuvan luonnonsuojelulain (HE 76/2022) myötä ekologinen kompensaatio on noussut Suomessa ajankohtaiseksi aiheeksi. Vaihtoehtoisesti, tiukat reunaehdot huomioiden, kompensaat…

Alterations of panoramic radiomorphometric indices in children and adolescents with beta-thalassemia major: A fractal analysis study

2021

Background Beta-thalassemia major is an inherited disorder that can cause bone deformity and loss of bone mineral density. The objective of this study is to evaluate the cortical and trabecular mandibular bone morphology of children and adolescents who have beta-thalassemia major (ß-TM) using a fractal dimension (FD) analysis and different panoramic radiomorphometric indices with digital panoramic radiographic images (DPRIs). Material and Methods The study included 80 patients (with 40 patients each of ß-TM and control). The mandibular cortical width (MCW), panoramic mandibular index (PMI), mandibular cortical index (MCI), and simple visual estimation (SVE) were evaluated, and an FD analysi…

Structure and Function of Desmosomes

2007

Desmosomes are prominent adhesion sites that are tightly associated with the cytoplasmic intermediate filament cytoskeleton providing mechanical stability in epithelia and also in several nonepithelial tissues such as cardiac muscle and meninges. They are unique in terms of ultrastructural appearance and molecular composition with cell type-specific variations. The dynamic assembly properties of desmosomes are important prerequisites for the acquisition and maintenance of tissue homeostasis. Disturbance of this equilibrium therefore not only compromises mechanical resilience but also affects many other tissue functions as becomes evident in various experimental scenarios and multiple diseas…

Oral health-related quality of life of patients after solid organ transplantation is not affected by oral conditions:results of a multicentre cross-s…

2020

Background This multicentre cross-sectional study aimed in examination of oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) of patients after solid organ transplantation (SOT). Material and Methods Patients after SOT (liver, lung and heart) at one out of three German centers (Goettingen, Essen, Leipzig) were included. For comparison, a healthy control (HC) was recruited. OHRQoL was assessed by German short form of oral health impact profile (OHIP G14). Oral examination comprised: decayed-, missing- and filled-teeth index (DMF-T), remaining teeth and periodontitis severity. Results In total, 196 patients after SOT and 130 HC with comparable age, gender and smoking habits were included (p>0.05). D…

Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma Associated with a Dental Implant: a case report and literature review

2011

Objectives: Prosthodontic rehabilitation using dental implants has become a common practice in dentistry at the present time. Although severe complications related to dental osseointegrated implants are uncommon, in recent years several cases of oral squamous cell carcinoma adjacent to dental implants have been published. Study Design: A 67-year-old edentulous woman developed an oral squamous cell carcinoma around right mandibular implant about 12 months after receiving dental implants. The treatments involve chemotherapy, explantation of the implants and radiotherapy. Result and Conclusions: The use of endosseous implants has been associated with a low risk for the development of cancer. H…

The Impact of Narrow-band Imaging on the Pre- and Intra- operative Assessments of Neoplastic and Preneoplastic Laryngeal Lesions. A Systematic Review

2020

Abstract Introduction Narrow-band imaging is an endoscopic diagnostic tool that, focusing on superficial vascular changes, is useful to detect suspicious laryngeal lesions, enabling their complete excision with safe and tailored resection margins. Objectives To analyze the applications and benefits of narrow-band imaging in detecting premalignant and malignant laryngeal lesions through a comparison with white-light endoscopy. Data Synthesis A literature search was performed in the PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science databases using strict keywords. Then, two authors independently analyzed the articles, read the titles and abstracts, and read completely only the relevant studies according to c…

Oral leukoplakia: the ongoing discussion on definition and terminology

2015

In the past decades several definitions of oral leukoplakia have been proposed, the last one, being authorized by the World Health Organization (WHO), dating from 2005. In the present treatise an adjustment of that definition and the 1978 WHO definition is suggested, being : “A predominantly white patch or plaque that cannot be characterized clinically or pathologically as any other disorder; oral leukoplakia carries an increased risk of cancer development either in or close to the area of the leukoplakia or elsewhere in the oral cavity or the head-and-neck region”. Furthermore, the use of strict diagnostic criteria is recommended for predominantly white lesions for which a causative factor…
