Oral verruciform xanthoma and erythroplakia associated with chronic graft-versus-host disease: A rare case report and review of the literature

2017

Abstract Background Oral verruciform xanthoma is an uncommon benign lesion. Although oral verruciform xanthoma occurs in healthy individuals, it has been also reported in association with some inflammatory conditions. The aim of this study is to report a case of oral verruciform xanthoma associated with chronic graft-versus-host disease and to review the literature on this topic. Case presentation A 47-year-old Caucasian male presented to the Sector of Oral Medicine “V. Margiotta”, University Policlinic “P. Giaccone” of Palermo complaining of a mass on the gingiva. He first noticed the painless mass 1 year ago. He reported to have undergone allogenic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation …

Human papillomaviruses in oral carcinoma and oral potentially malignant disorders: a systematic review.

2011

Human papillomavirus (HPV) in oral carcinoma (OSCC) and potentially malignant disorders (OPMD) is controversial. The primary aim was to calculate pooled risk estimates for the association of HPV with OSCC and OPMD when compared with healthy oral mucosa as controls. We also examined the effects of sampling techniques on HPV detection rates. Methods: Systematic review was performed using PubMed (January 1966-September 2010) and EMBASE (January 1990-September 2010). Eligible studies included randomized controlled, cohort and cross-sectional studies. Pooled data were analysed by calculating odds ratios, using a random effects model. Risk of bias was based on characteristics of study group, appr…

Oral leukoplakia; a proposal for simplification and consistency of the clinical classification and terminology

2019

There is a distinct lack of uniformity in the definitions and clinical terminologies related to oral leukoplakia and leukoplakialike lesions and disorders. Proposals have been put forward to subclassify leukoplakia into a homogeneous and a non-homogeneous type based on color only, being either predominantly white or mixed white-and-red, respectively, irrespective of the texture of the lesion. In this proposal there is no need anymore to regard the poorly defined proliferative verrucous leukoplakia as a separate entity. Since keratosis is primarily a histopathological term, its clinical use is discouraged. Alternative terminology for these so-called keratotic lesions and disorders has been p…

Yliopiston suuntaa etsimässä

2022

Vuoden 2010 alussa toteutettu Suomen yliopistokenttää ravistellut yliopistouudistus aiheutti aikanaan kiivasta keskustelua. Yhtäältä uudistusta puolustettiin vetoamalla yliopistojen autonomian lisääntymiseen ja kilpailukyvyn parantumiseen, toisaalta uudistus nähtiin yliopistodemokratian horjuttamisena ja keskitetyn ylhäältä alaspäin suuntautuvan top-down-hallinnon lisääntymisenä. Professori Thomas Wilhelmsson toimi uudistuksen aikana Helsingin yliopiston rehtorina ja hänen muistelmansa sekä arvionsa koskien yliopistouudistusta on julkaistu Gaudeamukselta. Kirja tarjoaa sisäpiirin perspektiivin yliopistouudistukseen ja tekee kiinnostavan syväluotauksen yhden keskeisimmän yliopistouudistuksen…

Proliferative verrucous leukoplakia: a proposal for diagnostic criteria.

2009

Proliferative verrucous leukoplakia (PVL) is a rare form of oral leukoplakia, which was first described in 1985 by Hansen et al. Since then, various published case series have presented PVL as a disease with aggressive biological behaviour due to its high probability of recurrence and a high rate of malignant transformation, usually higher than 70%. PVL is a long-term progressive condition, which is observed more frequently in women and elderly patients over 60 years at the time of diagnosis. Eventually, PVL tends to become multifocal with a progressive deterioration of the lesions, making it more and more difficult to control. Tobacco use does not seem to have a significant influence on th…

In vivo detection of cytokeratin filament network breakdown in cells treated with the phosphatase inhibitor okadaic acid.

2001

We have previously described vulva carcinoma-derived A-431 subclone AK13-1, which stably expresses fluorescently labeled cytokeratin filaments (CKFs). Time-lapse fluorescence microscopy of these cells permits the continuous monitoring of the dynamics of the CKF cytoskeleton in vivo. To study mechanisms and principles of CKF disassembly as it occurs, e.g., during mitosis and liver disease, we have treated cells with the phosphatase inhibitor okadaic acid (OA), which induces complete CKF network breakdown within 3–5 h without significantly affecting the organization of the actin- and tubulin-based cytofilaments. In time-lapse movies, we find that the network breakdown starts at the cell perip…

The quality of internet information relating to oral leukoplakia.

2009

Objectives: The Internet provides great opportunities for patient healthcare education, but poses risks that inaccurate, outdated or harmful information will be disseminated. Our objective was determine the quality of the information available on the internet in relation to oral leukoplakia. Study design: Sites were identified using 3 search engines (Google, Yahoo and MSN), and the search term ?oral leukoplakia?. The first 100 consecutive sites in each search were visited and classified. The websites were evaluated for quality of content by using the validated DISCERN rating instrument and the JAMA benchmarks; the existence of the Health on the Net (HON) seal was also registered. Results: T…

Securing Peace : article 9 and security policy under Koizumi Junichiro and Abe Shinzo

2016

Tarkastelen maisterintutkielmassani Japanin perustuslain sodan ja sotajoukkojen kieltävää 9. pykälää sekä Japanin turvallisuuspolitiikkaa kahden japanilaisen pääministerin, Koizumi Junichiron ja Abe Shinzon, puheissa. Tutkimuksen tehtävänä on selvittää, miten Koizumi ja Abe perustelevat 9. pykälän tulkinnan ja turvallisuuspolitiikan muutoksia heidän kausillaan sekä verrata tästä syntyviä tuloksia. Tutkimukseni monipuoliseen teoreettiseen viitekehykseen kuuluvat turvallisuus, kansainvälinen yhteisö, utopia ja realismi, rauha sekä retoriikka. Aineiston muodostaa rajattu määrä Koizumin ja Aben puheita, jotka olen valinnut käytyäni puheita läpi laajemmin. Tutkimuksen tulokset osoittavat, että J…

Oppimisen ja koulunkäynnin tuen järjestelyt kouluissa : rehtorien arviot tukijärjestelyjen toimivuudesta

2015
