Higher glucose availability augments the metabolic responses of the C2C12 myotubes to exercise-like electrical pulse stimulation
2021
The application of exercise-like electrical pulse simulation (EL-EPS) has become a widely used exercise mimetic in vitro. EL-EPS produces similar physiological responses as in vivo exercise, while less is known about the detailed metabolic effects. Routinely, the C2C12 myotubes are cultured in high-glucose medium (4.5 g/L), which may alter EL-EPS responses. In this study, we evaluate the metabolic effects of EL-EPS under the high- and low-glucose (1.0 g/L) conditions to understand how substrate availability affects the myotube response to EL-EPS. The C2C12 myotube, media, and cell-free media metabolites were analyzed using untargeted nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR)-based metabolomics. Furt…
Production of ethyl lactate by activated carbon-supported Sn and Zn oxide catalysts utilizing lignocellulosic side streams
2021
In this study, activated carbon-supported Sn and Zn oxide catalysts were prepared from hydrolysis lignin and used for the conversion of model solutions of trioses, hexoses, and lignocellulosic biomass hydrolysates to ethyl lactate. Both catalysts, SnO2@AC and ZnO@AC, were able to produce ethyl lactate in high yields. SnO2@AC was a more active and selective catalyst in triose (dihydroxyacetone) conversion, providing 99% yield to ethyl lactate. ZnO@AC, by contrast, was more selective in glucose and hydrolysate conversion, with a yield of 60% and 85%, respectively. The ethyl lactate yields were significantly higher than those from the optimized model solution experiments when using ZnO@AC cata…
Effect of Chronic Exercise Training on Blood Lactate Metabolism Among Patients With Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus : A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
2021
Purpose: To assess the effect of chronic exercise training on blood lactate metabolism at rest (i.e., basal lactate concentrations) and during exercise (i.e., blood lactate concentration at a fixed load, load at a fixed blood lactate concentration, and load at the individual blood lactate threshold) among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).Methods: PubMed (MedLine), Embase, Web of Science, and Scopus were searched. Randomized controlled trials, non-randomized controlled trials, and case-control studies using chronic exercise training (i.e., 4 weeks) and that assessed blood lactate concentrations at rest and during exercise in T2DM patients were included. Results: Thirteen studies …
Assessment of aerobic and anaerobic thresholds in five different technique specific incremental treadmill tests in cross country skiers
2016
The use of incremental tests to exhaustion is widely accepted in the field of exercise physiology in the assessment of athletes. These tests which can measure a number of physiological parameters can help coaches and athletes optimize training. Blood lactate concentrations (bLa) corresponding to heart rate (HR) provides insight on the athlete’s aerobic threshold (AerT) and anaerobic threshold (AnT). Cross country skiing is a sport where the selection of technique may influence the HR at which AerT and AnT occurs, eliciting higher bLa corresponding to lower HR depending on technique. Because of this, laboratory testing is crucial to provide coaches and athletes with the necessary information…
Nopeuden ja keston vaikutukset tasavauhtisten juoksuharjoitusten kuormittavuuteen
2005
Seppänen, M.J. 2004. Nopeuden ja keston vaikutukset tasavauhtisten juoksuharjoitusten kuormittavuuteen. Liikuntafysiologian Pro gradu -tutkielma. Jyväskylän yliopisto. Liikuntabiologian laitos.

Sotilailla marssi on yksi yleisimmistä fyysisen kuormittumisen muodoista. Marssin jälkeen sotilaan tulee nopeasti olla valmis toimintaan sekä fyysisellä, että henkisellä tasolla. Marssin jälkeistä pa…
Exercise precision medicine for type 2 diabetics : Targeted benefit or risk?
2023
Concurrent exercise and metformin administration may reduce the acute and chronic effects of exercise on glucose metabolism in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D). However, several studies suggest that combing metformin and exercise treatment may have no additive effect and even cause adverse effects in T2D patients. This case report aimed to highlight the challenges associated with prescribing exercise to type 2 diabetes patients undergoing metformin treatment. A 67-years old woman was followed-up for 5 months, including assessment of the acute and chronic glucose and lactate metabolism induced by concomitant exercise and metformin. The findings were four-fold: 1) During a high-intensity i…
