The organoleptic quality of fresh market tomato can be described by a set of attributes, including fruit appearance, taste, aroma and texture. Sensory analysis is the most-valid method to study organoleptic characteristics, particularly aroma and texture. A range of 144 recombinant inbred lines of tomato derived from a cross between a cherry tomato line and a large-fruited line was evaluated by descriptive sensory profiling. Elicitins are low molecular weight proteins secreted by all Phytophthora species analyzed so far. Application of the purified proteins to tobacco Nicotiana tabacum leads to the induction of resistance to subsequent inoculations with the black shank-causing agent, Phytophthora parasitica var nicotianae. In this paper, we describe the systemic characteristics of elicitin-induced acquired resistance in tobacco. Elicitin application is followed by the rapid translocation of the protein in the plant. The basic elicitin, cryptogein, induces necrosis formation in the leaves, which results from accumulation of the protein in these organs. Necrosis does not seem to be essential for the establishment…

Bemisia tabaci (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) is responsible for severe damage to horticultural and ornamental crops worldwide, mainly for its role as virus vector. In Italy, the B. tabaci Mediterranean (MED) and Middle East–Asia Minor 1 (MEAM1) cryptic species are widespread in the Southern regions as well as in Sicily and Sardinia. During the last two decades, MED populations progressively increased, in those areas where intensive farming is applied. Obtention and characterization of resistant starch from creole faba bean (Vicia faba L. creole) as a promising functional ingredient

Abstract A procedure easy to upscale industrially aimed at obtaining resistant starch (RS) type III (RS-III) was optimized, using a native faba bean from Mexico (Vicia faba L. creole) as RS source for the first time. Pullulanase debranching treatment (6–18 enzyme units (U)/g starch; 0–27 h) and retrogradation process (−30 °C, 2 °C or 20 °C; 1–6 days) was optimized for faba beans. Optimal conditions were determined at 18 U/g for 27 h and a retrogradation process at 20 °C for 6 days. Optimality Conditions for Non-Qualified Parabolic Control Problems

We consider parabolic state constrained optimal control problems where the usual Slater condition is not necessarily satisfied. Instead, a weaker interiority property is assumed. Optimality conditions with a Lagrange multiplier are given. As an application we present an augmented Lagrangian algorithm. Numerical test results are included.

Flexible joint robots, in particularly those which are equipped with harmonic-drive gears, can feature elasticities with hysteresis. Under heavy loads and large joint torques the hysteresis lost motion can lead to significant errors of tracking and positioning of the robotic links. In this paper, two approaches for compensating the nonlinear joint torsion with hysteresis are described and compared with each other. Both methods assume the measured signals available only on the motor side of joint transmissions. Modular Contact-Free Conveyors for Handling Planar Fragile Objects

Recent studies show that the handling of thin wafers in the photovoltaic industry can lead to unacceptable yields due to cell scratching and breaking. This paper presents the concept and design of a novel modular conveyor that is intended for handling planar fragile objects at a high speed without contact. Each element of the conveyor is a square block that is able to generate tilted air jets that lift and push the object in a single direction. Various handling functions can thus be achieved by the assembly of several blocks. Dynamic Modeling of Planar Multi-Link Flexible Manipulators

A closed-form dynamic model of the planar multi-link flexible manipulator is presented. The assumed modes method is used with the Lagrangian formulation to obtain the dynamic equations of motion. Explicit equations of motion are derived for a three-link case assuming two modes of vibration for each link. The eigenvalue problem associated with the mass boundary conditions, which changes with the robot configuration and payload, is discussed. The time-domain simulation results and frequency-domain analysis of the dynamic model are presented to show the validity of the theoretical derivation.
