Varieties Generated by Certain Models of Reversible Finite Automata

2006

Reversible finite automata with halting states (RFA) were first considered by Ambainis and Freivalds to facilitate the research of Kondacs-Watrous quantum finite automata. In this paper we consider some of the algebraic properties of RFA, namely the varieties these automata generate. Consequently, we obtain a characterization of the boolean closure of the classes of languages recognized by these models.

A Design-Oriented Analysis of Multimodality in English as a Foreign Language

2018

This empirical article investigates multimodality in English as a foreign language, both as seen in the use of multimodal texts as artefacts and pedagogical texts for learning, and through an analysis of the multimodal learning designs. We present observations from a year 10 classroom in Norway that worked with the novel The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian (Alexie, 2007). We explore a four-week teaching sequence, asking how different modes were involved when the educator designed literacy events around the novel, and how multimodality is present in the students’ meaning making. Our aim is to make explicit and discuss some of the silent literacy practices in English teaching at l…

Wspieranie nauczania języków mniejszości na przykładzie szkółki piłkarskiej z językiem niemieckim w Chrząstowicach na Opolszczyźnie

2016

The artide presents a local initiative of the German minority in Chrząstowice, which encourages children and youths to pursue a two-way activity, that is learning a minority language and actively spending free time outdoors. The author describes the functions of supporting minority languages and the parents’ motivation to let their children attend classes at the football academy. The study was conducted using the following research methods: individual in-depth interview (IDI) with the founder of the football academy and a ąuestionnaire survey filled in individually by the parents.

Mapping Digital Discourses of the Capital Region of Finland : Combining Onomastics, CADS, and GIS

2022

This article discusses the three Finnish city names Helsinki, Espoo, and Vantaa, and the urban discourses that surround them. The study reveals patterns of socio-spatial differentiation by examining what meanings people attach to these capital region cities and investigating how these meanings are expressed in online discourses. Using the methodological approach of corpus-assisted onomastics (CAO), this study incorporates onomastics, geographical information systems (GIS), and corpus linguistics. This interdisciplinary research also examines how corpus-assisted discourse studies (CADS) and GIS can be combined to reveal and visualize the contextual information and discursive patterns of topo…

Mayotte: Language Situation

2006

Mayotte is the easternmost of the four Comorian islands, an archipelago halfway between the east African coast and the northern tip of Madagascar. It is still a French overseas territory, with the status of a collectivite departementale since 2002. The official language is French. In some villages a Sakalava dialect of Malagasy is spoken. Nevertheless, most people are speakers of Comorian, the most widespread dialect on Mayotte being Shimaore. In two small enclaves, another dialect, Shikombani, is used.

Le forme della multimodalità. Segni, gesti e parole in classe.

2020

2. Teorētisko daļu veido divas nodaļas, kurās populārzinātniski ir izklāstīti ar pilsētu tekstiem saistīti jautājumi, definēti galvenie termini (t. sk. svešvalodās) un sniegti ieteikumi praktisko pētīj…

Revaluation of graffiti as unwanted texts in language acquisition

2018

The aim of the article is to theoretically substantiate the use of graffiti in the learning process and practically demonstrate how graffiti texts could be included in language acquisition (especially in the language as a first language lessons). Graffiti examples are taken from the linguistic landscape of Latvia to discuss with secondary school pupils the language use in the city, emotions in language, as well as to enhance understanding of linguistic and visual images on the various levels. The education context of Latvia is presented first, then the edusemiotics theory is briefly explained, followed by the general description of graffiti as a public sign. In the practical part, three ide…

ABSTRACTS of the 58th Professor Arturs Ozols International Academic Conference “GRAMMAR AND WORD FORMATION”, March 16–17, 2023

2023

2023. gadā 150. jubileja ir Latvijas Universitātes ilggadējam profesoram, Baltu filoloģijas nodaļas dibinātājam, izcilajam latviešu un baltu valodu pētniekam, fundamentālo darbu „Lettische Grammatik” (1922) un „Latviešu valodas gramatika” (1951) autoram Jānim Endzelīnam (1873–1961). 2023. gada konference veltīta vienai no svarīgākajām prof. Jāņa Endzelīna pētījumu jomām – gramatikai, t. sk. vārddarināšanai, šo jautājumu aprakstam un interpretācijai gan sinhroniskā, gan diahroniskā aspektā.
