Translanguaging as Playful Subversion of a Monolingual Norm in the Classroom
2018
A large part of the literature on translanguaging as a pedagogical theory has explored how an inclusive multilingual pedagogy can support students from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds to actively participate in the classroom. While much of this literature approaches classroom translanguaging as an instructional strategy designed to promote multilingual interactional practices, we analyse how multilingual practices can also take place as subversive language play in an educational context that is driven by a monolingual norm. Our data are video-recorded lessons from secondary-level Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) classrooms in Finland in which students whose L1 is …
Explaining Causes Behind SQL Query Formulation Errors
2020
This Full Research Paper presents the most prominent query formulation errors in Structured Query Language (SQL), and maps these errors to their cognitive explanations. Understanding query formulation errors is a key to teaching SQL. more effectively. However, studies on what kind of errors novices struggle with are relatively scarce when compared to, for example, programming languages. Although committing errors is a crucial part in learning, some errors are relatively easy to fix, and their commonness is not necessarily an indication of their difficulty. Other errors, however, halt the learning process, and are never fixed by the query writer. Using a previously established error taxonomy…
Recipient Design by Gestures : How Depictive Gestures Embody Actions in Cooking Instructions
2022
This paper investigates how depictive gestures, i.e., hand movements that depict actions, scenes or objects, are configured and used for accomplishing instructions. By drawing on video recordings of second language interactions in cooking classes for newcomers in Finland, we focus on instructions that project a certain type of complying bodily action as the relevant next action. We demonstrate that the instructions are designed to be sensitive not only to the contingencies of the material ecology of the kitchen but also to the epistemic and linguistic asymmetries between the participants. The analysis shows how depictive gestures contribute to the forward-feeding function of cooking instruc…
Antīkās reminiscences latīņu okazionālajā dzejā Rīgā
2019
Līdz ar protestantu reformāciju 16. gadsimta pirmajā pusē arī Livonijā sāka ienākt Eiropas humānisma strāvojumi, kas mijiedarbībā ar vēsturiskiem un reliģiskiem notikumiem aktivizēja intelektuālo dzīvi un radīja labvēlīgu vidi literatūras attīstībai: dzejnieki humānisti Rīgā sāka sacerēt dzejas darbus latīņu valodā, kuru vidū ievērojama vieta ir 17. gadsimtā radītajai okazionālajai dzejai. Rakstā „Antīkās reminiscences latīņu okazionālajā dzejā Rīgā” aplūkota 17. gadsimtā Rīgā sacerētā kāzu (epithalamium, hymenaeus, carmen nuptialis, u. c.) un piemiņas dzeja (epicedium, epitaphium, carmen funebris, carmen lugubris) pievēršot uzmanību tajā ietverto antīko sižetu un tēlu poētikai. Virtual Slovak : insight into learning Slovak in an e-learning environment
2015
This paper offers insight into learning Slovak in an e-learning environment. The need to reach distance-learners of Slovak led to the implementation of a web-based course on Slovak language and culture in 2008–2010. The pedagogical basis of the course, called Virtual Slovak, is the socioconstructivist approach to teaching and learning, in which the focus is on the development of learners’ communicative competence. This teaching experiment led to a study in which the focus was on learners’ beliefs and experiences regarding learning Slovak in an e-learning environment. The results showed that this particular learning environment had a positive impact on the development of learners’ agency. Th…
Grappling with the Oral Skills: The learning processes of the low-educated adult second language and literacy learner
2013
This paper focuses on the learning processes in L2 literacy classes in the Netherlands, discussing specifically possible influences of the learning processes during the practice of the oral skills. To achieve a better understanding of the students’ spoken language development, classroom processes of six adult L2 literacy classes were observed during a period of eight months and students were pre- and post-assessed. In comparing the classes, notable differences in gain scores in morphosyntactic features as well as aspects of relevance and coherence in discourse surfaced. In order to explain these differences, certain factors were examined in relation to learner characteristics, classro…
Plonk & Replonk, le pastiche de l’histoire
2012
