The essay, starting from the well-known life cycle of tourist destinations elaborated by Richard Butler in 1980, reflects on the tourist destiny and on the potential of territories still today perceived as dangerous (Iraq, Sri Lanka, Vietnam).

The Criminals in Vilnius

On 29 April 1930, the premiere of Ferdinand Bruckner’s The Criminals (original title Die Verbrecher) directed by Aleksander Zelwerowicz took place at the Teatr Wielki na Pohulance in Vilnius. After two performances, the play was cancelled by the mayor of Vilnius. The authorities of the city were outraged by the ‘drastic amoral scenes (homosexual love, abortion)’. Zelwerowicz submitted his resignation, which he withdrew a few days later. A performance combined with a debate on the drama was organised. Ensimmäinen moderni terroristinen itsemurhaisku tapahtui Libanonissa vuonna 1981. Iskua seuranneina vuosikymmeninä itsemurhaiskut ovat levinneet lukuisten eri terroristijärjestöjen käyttöön useille eri maantieteellisille alueille. Tässä pro gradu -tutkielmassa keskityn itsemurhaiskuihin ja tämän iskutaktiikan leviämiseen eri terroristiryhmien välillä. Tutkimus kartoittaa samalla eri terroristiryhmien välisiä verkostoja. Tutkimuksen tapausesimerkeiksi valikoitui kolme terroristijärjestöä: libanonilainen Hizbollah, srilankalainen Tamilitiikerit sekä palestiinalaisjärjestöt Hamas ja Palestiinan islamilainen jihad. Työssä selvitettiin menetelmää suprajohtavien kontaktien liittämiseksi ohuen eristekerroksen avulla vahvasti n-seostettuun puolijohtavaan InAs-nanolankaan. Lisäksi tutkittiin näin luotujen tunneliliitosten soveltamista nanolankojen elektronisen lämpötilan mittaukseen ja sen jäähdyttämiseen. Nanolangat oli kasvatettu epitaksiaalisesti kultananopartikkeleiden katalysoimina, ja suprajohtavat kontaktit valmistettiin niiden päälle käyttäen tavanomaisia mikrovalmistusmenetelmiä, elektronisuihkulitografiaa ja -höyrystystystä. Dry years and their relationship to crop production in Sri Lanka

Drought is a distinct agroclimatological hazard with far reaching consequences upon crop production. Among them, famines are regarded the most serious effects of climatological drought. Although there is no doubt about the principally valid relationship between drought and production losses it seems more problematic how this relationship can be proved statistically. In this paper annual rainfall data and production figures of the three major crops of Sri Lanka, rice (paddy), tea and rubber, are correlated, but only partially a true relationship between dry years and production losses could be observed. The orthogonal structure of Monsoon rainfall variation over Sri Lanka

The spatial organization of Monsoon rainfall over Sri Lanka is examined using Orthogonal Factor Analysis (OFA) on long-term mean monthly rainfall data. Three types of orthogonal structure of Monsoon regime in Sri Lanka have been identified. Interpretation of orthogonal factor scores revealed that a large amount of rainfall occurs from March to October in the southwestern parts of Sri Lanka, from December to February in the eastern parts, and in November in the northern and mid-western parts which are all represented by high positive factor scores.
