Climate Effects on Breeding Phenology of Peregrine and Lanner Falcons in the Mediterranean

2022

We explored the effects of weather on the timing and reproduction of the Mediterranean Peregrine Falcon Falco peregrinus brookei and the Lanner Falcon F. biarmicus feldeggii living on the Mediterranean island of Sicily. We found that the start date of incubation has changed during 1979–2019 and analysed whether incubation timing affected the productivity of both populations and whether the change of incubation date and the quality of breeding sites depended on climatic conditions. Overall spring temperature and rainfall increased on Sicily and the incubation date of the Peregrine and the Lanner Falcon has shifted to be about one week later over the time period 1979 to 2019. First evidence by satellite telemetry of lanner falcon's falco biarmicus feldeggii natal dispersal outside sicily, and a review of existing data

2019

The Italian population of the threatened European Lanner Falcon is mainly sedentary. Thanks to satellite telemetry, we recorded the first evidence on natal dispersal of a juvenile male (Falc36) outside Sicily. Falc36 was deployed with a GPS-GSM device in May 2017, after an initial phase of movements close to the natal cliff and of short wandering in Sicily crossed the Messina Strait in mid July and arrived in Apulia (south Italy). There we were able to follow his displacements and settling until the end of November when the transmitter broke up. Falc36 used mainly open habitats composed of arable field and heterogeneous agricultural areas firstly north of Altamura and Gravina, and from late…

Afterword 2. All the planners are merely players and each of them, in his time, plays many parts

2018

The paper proposes a critical reflection on the role of planners in planning practices, emphasising the ethical dimension of the methodological approach followed in the use of narratives and autobiographies, typical of John Forester's experience, in this type of study. The use of narratives and biographical experiences reveals aspects of great relevance concerning how planners interact with different actors and groups of actors and sensitivity to the socio-spatial diversity of the same in their different life experiences.

Bridging Strategic Project Planning with Tactical Planning in the Design Process

2020

The paper studies the issue of bridging strategic planning with tactical/operative planning in the design process of complex AEC-projects. The paper present user-friendly planning methods on a tactical level which gives the planner intuitive control over dependent, independent, and interdependent tasks during the design process. In our understanding the planning process starts at the strategic level using integrated milestones as a prerequisite for handling progress and strategic coordination in projects. Moving forward in the planning process towards the operative level, the process requires flexible and agile methods which ensures robustness in the various plans that must be made. In this…

A Behavioral Approach for Logistics System Analysis and Design: A Reverse Logistics Case

2002

Traditional logistic system analysis quite often assumes a single decisionmaker (the planner) operating in a state of complete information and full decision power. He pursues the objective of designing an efficient logistic network by solving a sequence of operational problems mainly in the form of optimization models. More realistically, one should consider that the decision power is actually distributed within the logistics system among different actors (agents or holons) having different (conflictual or cooperative) goals, following different behavioural rules and generating interdipendencies. The shift from a SAS (single-agent system) approach to a MAS (multi-agent system) one induces s…

The importance of level stratification for quantitative MR studies of lumbar intervertebral discs : a cross-sectional analysis in 101 healthy adults

2019

Purpose: To investigate whether quantitative T2-times depend on lumbar intervertebral disc (IVD) level. Methods: The lumbar spine (Th12/L1–L5/S1) of 101 participants (53.5% female, 30.0[± 3.6]years, 173.5[± 9.6]cm and 69.9[± 13.4]kg), without history of back pain, was examined on a 3T scanner with sagittal T2-mapping. All IVDs were stratified according to Pfirrmann grade and lumbar level, with mean T2-time determined for the entire IVD volume and in five subregions of interests. Results: Significant level-dependent T2-time differences were detected, both for the entire IVD volume and its subregions. For the entire IVD volume, Pfirrmann grade 2 IVDs displayed 9–18% higher T2-times in Th12/L1…

El Rol de planificadores urbanos en los colegios

2017

In the urban planning discipline, active and ethical participation must include not only the adult segment of the population, but also younger people. However, many issues still have to be addressed in order to turn this theoretical approach into practice. This paper revolves around the overall role of the urban planning scholar. In particular, it reflects on the issue of how schoolchildren and young people develop a sense of belonging to their neighborhood, based on an action research held in a complex Southern Italian metropolis, Palermo, in the 2013-2015 period. A cooperative multidisciplinary work has allowed to thoroughly address this issue and to build the theoretical foundations of t…

Postoperative Sagittal Balance Has Only a Limited Role in the Development of Adjacent Segment Disease After Lumbar Spine Fusion for Degenerative Lumb…

2022

Study Design. Retrospective additional analysis of a prospective follow-up study. Objectives. We aimed to find out whether poor postoperative sagittal alignment increases revisions for adjacent segment disease (ASD) after lumbar spine fusion (LSF) performed for degenerative lumbar spine disease. Summary of Background Data. Revisions for ASD accumulate over time after LSF for degenerative lumbar spine disease. The etiology of ASD is considered multifactorial. Yet, the role of postoperative sagittal balance in this process remains controversial. Materials and Methods. A total of 215 consecutive patients who had undergone an elective LSF surgery for spinal stenosis with (80%) or without (20%) …

Spatial analysis of lanner falcon habitat preferences: Implications for agro-ecosystems management at landscape scale and raptor conservation

2014

Abstract Sicily hosts the largest European population of the endangered lanner falcon, a poorly known species which needs conservation planning based on habitat preferences. A distribution model on 10 × 10 km cells of Sicily was described using Generalized Linear Models and variation partitioning methods. This modelling approach extracted explanatory factors, pure and joint effects of greatest influence from subsets of variables controlled for multi-collinearity and spatial autocorrelation. Analytical cartography used the environmental favourability function to assess habitat preferences, and the insecurity index estimated the degree to which lanner falcon occupancy is represented in the Na…
