Children’s beliefs concerning their school performance at the end of the first grade in Finland

This study examines primary-school children’s beliefs about their school performance at the end of their first school year in Finland and feedback that they have received, and furthermore possible gender differences between these beliefs. Children from Grade 1 (N = 544), approximately 7 years old, were interviewed. The data were assessed using problem-driven content analyzis and inductive reasoning. The analyzis revealed ten categories of children’s beliefs regarding their school success and failure. One obligation regards the need for researchers to adopt a reflexive approach to considering how children’s perspectives and experiences are represented. Artikkelissa kysytään, miten lasten kotihoidosta ja sen tukemisesta keskustellaan paikallisesti. Kun-nat tuottavat lasten kotihoidon merkityksellistämiselle erityisen kontekstin. Kunnat vastaavat niin varhaiskasvatuspalvelujen järjestämisestä kuin lasten kotihoidon tuen rahoittamisesta kuitenkin niin, että oikeus kotihoidon tukeen syntyy palveluun kytkeytyvän oikeuden käyttämättä jättämisestä. Brain responses to speech sounds in infants and children with and without familial risk for dyslexia

Dyslexia, a specific reading disability, runs in families. Therefore, the risk for a child to become dyslexic increases multifold if reading difficulties occur in the family. One risk factor for dyslexia is a deficit in speech perception. Using EEG, speech sound discrimination was found to be more demanding than non- speech discrimination in typical readers in Study I. In Study II, in children with dyslexia in 3rd grade, enhanced brain responses were observed and found to be associated with better performance in reading accuracy, spelling accuracy and phonemic length discrimination tasks.
