Child-Centered and Teacher-Directed Practices in Two Different Countries: A Descriptive Case Study in Finnish and Japanese Grade 1 Classrooms
2023
This descriptive case study examined how teaching practices were evidenced in Grade 1 classrooms in two different cultural and educational contexts, Finland and Japan. Teachers’ teaching practices were video-recorded in 53 classrooms in Finland and six classrooms in Japan and rated with the Early Childhood Classroom Observation Measure by trained investigators. Four Finnish teachers and two Japanese teachers having the highest scores in either child-centered or teacher-directed practices were selected for a descriptive case study to take a closer look at how teaching practices in terms of management, climate, and instruction are evidenced in authentic classroom situations. Adolescents’ and mothers’ temperament types and their roles in early adolescents’ socioemotional functioning
2018
The present study examined adolescents’ and mothers’ temperament types and their roles in the socioemotional functioning of early adolescents. A total of 869 sixth-grade students and 668 mothers participated in the study. The students rated their temperament and socioemotional functioning and the mothers rated their own temperament. Latent profile analyses identified four temperament types among the adolescents (resilient, reserved, average, and mixed) and three types among the mothers (resilient, average, and mixed). The results showed that the adolescents with resilient or reserved temperaments reported significantly fewer conduct problems and emotional symptoms, less hyperactivity, and …
The Modifying Mirror
2023
Abstract This chapter compares music listening with the infant’s experience of care. Several scholars have argued that music can be used for scaffolding one’s self-experience. Developmental psychologists, in turn, maintain a wide consensus over the claim that, in early interaction, the attuned caregiver supports and modifies the infant’s self-experience in various ways. The chapter brings these phenomena together, illustrating how the examination of the early self/other relation can teach us something important concerning the listener/music relation. The first section elaborates on the scaffolding function of music and clarifies two ambiguities haunting the debate. The second section reloca…

This ethnographic study of the urban Muslim poor in Tanzania and The Gambia explores the causes behind and meanings of early marriage in these countries and discusses the likelihood of the recent legislative changes to have effect on actual practice among the poor in the towns and cities of these countries.
"Ei se ole vaan laulua" : kuorolaisten kokemuksia Jyväskylän musiikkiluokkien A-kuoron ja Vox Aurean vaikutuksista
2017
Tutkimukseni tehtävänä on selvittää, miten Jyväskylän musiikkiluokkien A-kuorossa (sittemmin Vox Aurea) laulaneet ihmiset kokevat kuoron vaikuttaneen elämäänsä.

This study addresses the conceptual outlines of the financial capabilities of moth- ers. It examines how the perspectives and concepts of the capability approach can be utilized in outlining the relationship between motherhood and financial aspects. The aim is to develop conceptual tools for analyzing the choices and financial agency of mothers. This study emphasizes the methodological dimension using three elements: the capability approach, feminist economics and memory work. The main element of the study is the capability approach, which provides the perspective of the inquiry and the concepts for analysis. Feminist economics provides a definition of economy and a way to produce knowledge…
