Long-term comparison of corneal aberration changes after laser in situ keratomileusis: mechanical microkeratome versus femtosecond laser flap creatio…

2010

Purpose To compute and compare visual acuity, refractive outcomes, and anterior corneal aberration changes after myopic laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) with flap creation by a mechanical microkeratome and by a femtosecond laser. Setting Private practice refractive surgery center, Valencia, Spain. Design Comparative case series. Methods Patients were assigned to have LASIK flap creation with a mechanical microkeratome (Carriazo-Barraquer) or a femtosecond laser (IntraLase). The Visx S2 excimer laser was used for myopic ablation in all cases. Main outcome measures included uncorrected and corrected distance visual acuities and the defocus equivalent. Higher-order aberrations (HOAs) were …

Dissociated secondary hyperalgesia in a subject with a large-fibre sensory neuropathy

1993

In the skin surrounding a site of injury, hyperalgesia develops to mechanical stimuli. Two types of secondary hyperalgesia (to light touch and punctate stimuli) have recently been differentiated, based on different durations and sizes of the area involved. We studied secondary hyperalgesia in a subject who had a loss of myelinated afferent nerve fibres below the neck that spared the A delta group. Stroking with a cotton swab was not perceived anywhere on affected skin either before or after injection of 60 micrograms of capsaicin. Thus, there was no hyperalgesia to light touch. Capsaicin injection into the volar forearm evoked normal pain and flare. A von Frey probe exerting a force of 40 m…

Nitric oxide metabolites and erythrocyte deformability in a group of subjects with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome

2014

Our aim was to evaluate nitric oxide metabolites (nitrite and nitrate), expressed as NOx, and erythrocyte deformability, expressed as elongation index, in a group of subjects with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS). We enrolled 48 subjects (36 men and 12 women; mean age 50.3 ± 14.68 yrs) with OSAS diagnosed after a 1-night cardiorespiratory sleep study. OSAS severity was assessed evaluating the apnea/hypopnea index (AHI) and subjects were subdivided in two subgroups: Low (L = AHI 30). NOx was examined converting nitrate into nitrite with a nitrate reductase and then assessing nitrite with spectrophotometry after the addition of Griess reagent. The elongation index was obtained using th…

Identification of predictive variables for the recurrence of oral mucocele

2018

Background Oral mucocele is the most common minor salivary gland lesion with good prognosis after surgical removal. However, its recurrence is not rare, sometimes bothersome. This study aimed to identify the possible predictive variables affecting the recurrence rate of oral mucocele. Material and Methods The histoclinical data of 164 patients diagnosed with oral mucocele were retrospectively obtained by reviewing dental records. The predictive variables for its recurrence were identified by analyzing its recurrence rate according to clinical variables. Results The recurrence rate showed the significant differences according to location and age. Oral mucocele recurred with significantly hig…

Comparison of visual and refractive results of Toric Implantable Collamer Lens with bioptics for myopic astigmatism.

2013

PURPOSE: To compare visual and refractive results of Toric Implantable Collamer Lens (TICL) and bioptics (ICL plus excimer corneal surgery) to treat myopic astigmatism. METHODS: Eighty-one eyes underwent TICL implantation and 83 eyes were treated with bioptics (corneal ablation was performed between 1.5 and 6 months after ICL implantation). Uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA), corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), refraction, adverse events, safety, and efficacy were evaluated 12 months postoperatively. RESULTS: At 12 months postoperatively, the mean spherical equivalent was -0.15 ± 0.36 diopters (D) in the TICL group and -0.08 ± 0.26 D in the bioptics group (p = 0.099). Sixty-six …

Angiotensin converting enzyme has an inhibitory role in CGRP metabolism in human skin

2005

The neutral endopeptidase (NEP) is important for calcitonin gene related peptide (CGRP) degradation, while the role of angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) remains unclear. By using dermal microdialysis we explored the effect of phosphoramidon (NEP blocker), captopril (ACE blocker) and a mixture of both drugs on the intensity of electrically-induced CGRP-mediated neurogenic flare. The results reveal that phosphoramidon elevated flare intensity, but that this was not further increased by adding captopril. In contrast, neurogenic flare was decreased when the drug mixture was applied in compared to NEP only. Electrically released CGRP levels could be measured directly in perfusates containing p…

Single versus double femtosecond laser pass for incomplete laser in situ keratomileusis flap in contralateral eyes: Visual and optical outcomes

2011

Purpose To evaluate visual acuity, refractive outcomes, and anterior corneal higher-order aberrations (HOAs) after myopic laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) with uneventful single femtosecond laser pass versus double pass performed for intraoperative suction loss. Setting Private refractive surgery center, Valencia, Spain. Design Cohort study. Methods After the LASIK flap was created with a single pass of an Intralase femtosecond laser in 1 eye and a double pass in the fellow eye, the ablation was performed with a Visx S2 laser. At 12 months, the refraction, uncorrected (UDVA) and corrected (CDVA) distance visual acuities, and anterior corneal HOAs were measured with 4.0 mm and 6.0 mm pup…

Reduced recanalization rates of the great saphenous vein after endovenous laser treatment with increased energy dosing: Definition of a threshold for…

2006

Background Recent reports indicated a correlation between the amount of energy released during endovenous laser treatment (ELT) of the great saphenous vein (GSV) and the success and durability of the procedure. Our objective was to analyze the influence of increased energy dosing on immediate occlusion and recanalization rates after ELT of the GSV. Methods GSVs were treated with either 15 or 30 W of laser power by using a 940-nm diode laser with continuous fiber pullback and tumescent local anesthesia. Patients were followed up prospectively with duplex ultrasonography at day 1 and at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months. Results A total of 114 GSVs were treated with 15 W, and 149 GSVs were treated with …

Pilot study for the evaluation of morphological and functional changes in retinal blood flow in patients with insulin resistance and/or type 2 diabet…

2012

Background: The aim of this study was to investigate early morphological and functional pathology in the retinal micro-circulation in patients with insulin resistance and/or type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Methods: Fifty-four subjects, without features of retinopathy under ophthalmological investigation, were recruited for study participation and were classifed into three study groups according to their metabolic staging: (1) Group C comprised nondiabetic, insulin-sensitive subjects with a BMI <28kg/m2; (2) Group IR comprised nondiabetic, insulin-resistant, obese subjects with a BMI ≥28 kg/m2; and (3) Group DM comprised patients with manifested T2DM. Retinal microvascular blood flow was…

Impact of environmental temperature on skin thickness and microvascular blood flow in subjects with and without diabetes.

2006

Glucose measurement from different skin areas might be influenced by changes in skin texture due to several environmental confounders. Our study was performed to investigate the effect of changes in ambient temperature on skin thickness and microvascular skin blood flow in subjects with and without diabetes at the lower forearm.Thirteen subjects with diabetes and seven without diabetes participated in the study. The investigations were performed in a temperature- and humidity-controlled climatic chamber (EMPA, St. Gallen, Switzerland). Starting at 25 degrees C, the environmental temperature was changed in 4 degrees C steps every 40 min. Skin thickness was measured by an ultrasonic reflectio…
