Off-line path correction of robotic face milling using static tool force and robot stiffness

2015

In this paper the developed method for off-line compensation of tool deflections when milling aluminum with an industrial robot is presented. The efficiency of this approach is verified with high precision measurements of deflections using a laser tracker. The compensation method includes both the static milling process model which can predict the mean value components of the tool forces and a new combined local/global approach for estimating the combined stiffnesses of joints. With a process model such as the one presented in this paper and estimates of the robot's joint stiffness values, the tool path can be adjusted to counteract deflections of the tool during milling operations. The mod…

<title>Safety problems in free space optical transmission</title>

2006

The paper is focused on safety of exploitation of optical transmission devices in free space. The subjects concerning propagation of "open" optical stream and its' possible dangerous influence on environment, mainly living organisms are discussed. An attempt to evaluate an installation and exploitation of transmitting devices was made, concerning dangers, requirements, recommendations and restrictions, concluding from accepted safety standards (IEC 60825- 1 :2005, EN 60825-1 :2005 and in Poland PN-EN 60825-1 :2005 "Safety of laser devices - Equipment classification, requirements and user's guide"; IEC 60825-12:2004, EN 60825-12:2005 and in Poland PN-EN 60825-12:2005 "Safety of free space op…

Dynamic railroad inspection using the laser-air hybrid ultrasonic technique

2006

Laser-Air Hybrid Ultrasonic Technique (LAHUT) combines laser generation with air-coupled detection of ultrasound. The technique is non-contact and has the characteristic of operating from remote distances. Acoustic wave laser-generation apparatus can be metres away from the interrogated surface while air-coupled detection standoff can be on the order of several centimetres. The technique has the unique capability of interrogating structural materials in their true industrial environment. Dynamic tests are performed on parts with complex geometry, limited accessibility and curved surfaces. Also, dark and rough finish surfaces, which significantly reduce the efficiency of optical detection te…

Particle distribution in dilute solid liquid unbaffled tanks via a novel laser sheet and image analysis based technique

2013

The availability of experimental information on particle distribution inside stirred tanks is a topic of great importance for many industrial applications such as catalysis and polymerization. The measurement of solid particle distribution is not simple and the development of suitable measuring techniques is still an open problem in chemical engineering research. In this work, a non-intrusive optical technique for measuring particle concentration fields in solid–liquid systems is discussed. The “Laser Sheet Image Analysis” (LSIA) technique described here makes use of a laser sheet, a digital camera for image acquisition and a suitable procedure for post-processing. It is able to provide sol…

Fiber laser mode locked through an evolutionary algorithm

2015

Mode locking of fiber lasers generally involves adjusting several control parameters, in connection with a wide range of accessible short-pulse dynamics. In this Letter, we experimentally demonstrate the ability of an evolutionary algorithm to prescribe a set of cavity parameters entailing specific self-starting mode locking. The prescribed parameters are applied to electrically driven polarization controllers, thus shaping the effective nonlinear transfer function at play within the fiber cavity. According to the specifications of the objective function used for the optimization procedure, various short-pulse regimes are obtained. Our versatile method represents an effective novel avenue f…

Proof of concept of wayside railroad wheel inspection using a laser-air hybrid ultrasonic technique

2003

Non-destructive inspection of railroad wheels is performed in maintenance shops, where wheels are removed and inspected individually. No technique is yet available to the railroad industry to perform wayside inspections of wheels on a moving train. The characteristics of laser and air-coupled ultrasound are discussed to justify the use of a laser-air hybrid ultrasonic technique. Laser generation of ultrasound is combined with air-coupled detection to provide a flexible non-contact and remote technique that would enable the railroad industry to perform wayside inspections of moving railroad wheels. The present paper describes Proof of Concept set-up and results of the experiments performed a…

Using input shaping and pressure feedback to suppress oscillations in slewing motion of lightweight flexible hydraulic crane

2015

This paper presents a method to actively reduce vibrations in the flexible mechanical structure of a hydraulically actuated vehicle loader crane. Based on information on the natural frequency and damping of a simplified model of the crane an input shaping scheme is set up to control the proportional valve leading to substantially reductions in oscillations. The method is compared and combined with a pressure feedback control of the proportional valve that actively suppresses transient variations in pressure. A full scale vehicle loader crane is used in the experimental verification of the method, and the motion of the tool point of the crane is measured by a high precision laser tracker. Th…

Rapid and improved identification of drinking water bacteria using the Drinking Water Library, a dedicated MALDI-TOF MS database.

2021

Abstract According to the European Directives (UE) 2020/2184 and 2009/54/EC, which establishes the sanitary criteria for water intended for human consumption in Europe, water suitable for human consumption must be free of the bacterial indicators Escherichia coli, Clostridium perfringens and Enterococcus spp. Drinking water is also monitored for heterotrophic bacteria, which are not a human health risk, but can serve as an index of bacteriological water quality. Therefore, a rapid, accurate, and cost-effective method for the identification of these colonies would improve our understanding of the culturable bacteria of drinking water and facilitate the task of water management by treatment f…

Nanoscale chemistry and atomic-scale microstructure of a bulk Ni3Sn material built using selective laser melting of elemental powder blends

2021

Abstract Cubic specimens of the intermetallic Ni3Sn compound were built using selective laser melting of elemental powder blends. A specimen built at a laser power of 200 W and a scanning speed of 0.5 m/s was determined to have a homogeneous distribution of Ni and Sn on a mesoscopic scale in spite of a 2 at.% Sn deficiency. Characterization of the microstructure using the HAADF-STEM technique reveals a dispersion of ultrafine Ni particles, nanoscale chemical inhomogeneity and the formation of antiphase nanodomains in the matrix of equiaxed Ni3Sn grains. While a mesoscopic homogeneity of the specimen demonstrates a prospect of additive manufacturing of a bulk intermetallic material using sel…
