Flexural vibrations of discontinuous layered elastically bonded beams

2018

Abstract This paper addresses the dynamic flexural behavior of layered elastically bonded beams carrying an arbitrary number of elastic translational supports and rotational joints. The beams are referred to as discontinuous for the discontinuities of response variables at the application points of supports/joints. The Euler-Bernoulli hypothesis is assumed to hold for each layer separately, and a linear constitutive relation between the horizontal interlayer slip and the interlaminar shear force is considered. Based on the theory of generalized functions to handle the discontinuities of response variables due to supports/joints, exact beam modes are obtained from a characteristic equation b…

Characterization of micro-fibrillated cellulose fiber suspension flow using multi scale velocity profile measurements

2017

Rheological properties and boundary layer flow behavior of Micro Fibrillated Cellulose (MFC) suspended in water was studied using a novel velocity profiling rheometric technique. The method is based on measuring stationary velocity profiles of fluid flow in a straight tube simultaneously by Doppler Optical Coherence Tomography (DOCT) and by Ultrasound Velocity Profiling (UVP). The high resolution DOCT provides velocity profiles near the transparent tube wall, while UVP yields corresponding information in the interior parts of the flow. The data from the two instruments is combined into a comprehensive velocity profile including both the thin boundary layer near the wall and the interior par…

Nucleant layer effect on nanocolumnar ZnO films grown by electrodeposition

2013

Different ZnO nanostructured films were electrochemically grown, using an aqueous solution based on ZnCl2, on three types of transparent conductive oxides grow on commercial ITO (In2O3:Sn)-covered glass substrates: (1) ZnO prepared by spin coating, (2) ZnO prepared by direct current magnetron sputtering, and (3) commercial ITO-covered glass substrates. Although thin, these primary oxide layers play an important role on the properties of the nanostructured films grown on top of them. Additionally, these primary oxide layers prevent direct hole combination when used in optoelectronic devices. Structural and optical characterizations were carried out by scanning electron microscopy, atomic for…

Preliminary study on the laser cleaning of stainless steels after high temperature oxidation

2000

Abstract The objective of the present work was to estimate the influence of pulsed laser irradiation on the removal of the oxide layer, which is developed on the surface of stainless steels during their exposure to high temperature oxidation. In general, this layer is a protective one, mainly against corrosion. However, in many manufacturing applications or maintenance work, the removal of the oxides is necessary; for example, the metallic surfaces should be cleaned before welding, otherwise the presence of oxides increases the tendency to brittle behaviour of the joint. In this study, a pulsed Nd:YAG laser (λ=1.064 μm, 10 ns) was used for the surface cleaning of three stainless steels with…

Made available in DSpace on 2021-06-25T10:46:55Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2020-01-01 Background: To evaluate the influence of the association of the universal adhesive system to different energy densities of the Nd:YAG laser on the hydraulic conductance of dentin. Material and Methods: Fifty bovine dentin discs were made. The samples were stratified into four groups (n = 10) according to the treatment performed; SBU- Adper Single Bond Universal (3M ESPE), SBU_60 - SBU associated with the Nd:YAG laser (60mJ, 10Hz, 0.6W - 47.77 J / cm²), SBU_80 - SBU associated with the Nd:YAG laser (80mJ, 10Hz, 0.8 W - 63.69 J / cm2) and C – dentin without treatment (smear layer). Comparative study of debris and smear layer removal with EDTA and Er,Cr:YSGG laser.

2018

Background To evaluate in vitro, the ability in removing debris and Smear Layer of 17% EDTA and Er,Cr:YSGG laser. Material and methods 58 unirradicular teeth were instrumented with MTwo® and divided into 3 groups according to irrigation protocol: 17%EDTA, laser and a combination of 17%EDTA and laser. All samples were analyzed in the apical and middle third with Scanning Electron Microscope. The Chi-cuadrado and McNemar tests were used to determine the statistical analysis and data processing and analysis was performed with the statistical package StatGraphics Centurion XVI. Results Debris analysis showed statistical significant differences when compared EDTA vs laser and EDTA vs EDTA+laser …

Momentum and energy dissipation of hot electrons in a Pb/Ag(111) quantum well system

2021

The band structure of multilayer systems plays a crucial role for the ultrafast hot carrier dynamics at interfaces. Here, we study the energy- and momentum-dependent quasiparticle lifetimes of excited electrons in a highly ordered Pb monolayer film on Ag(111) prior and after the adsorption of a monolayer of 3,4,9,10-perylene-tetracarboxylic dianhydride (PTCDA). Using time-resolved two-photon momentum microscopy with femtosecond visible light pulses, we show that the electron dynamics of the Pb/Ag(111) quantum well system is largely dominated by two types of scattering processes: (i) isotropic intraband scattering processes within the quantum well state (QWS) and (ii) isotropic interband sca…

Real-space imaging with pattern recognition of a ligand-protected Ag374 nanocluster at sub-molecular resolution

2018

High-resolution real-space imaging of nanoparticle surfaces is desirable for better understanding of surface composition and morphology, molecular interactions at the surface, and nanoparticle chemical functionality in its environment. However, achieving molecular or sub-molecular resolution has proven to be very challenging, due to highly curved nanoparticle surfaces and often insufficient knowledge of the monolayer composition. Here, we demonstrate sub-molecular resolution in scanning tunneling microscopy imaging of thiol monolayer of a 5 nm nanoparticle Ag374 protected by tert-butyl benzene thiol. The experimental data is confirmed by comparisons through a pattern recognition algorithm t…

Mechanical cleaning of graphene using in situ electron microscopy

2020

Avoiding and removing surface contamination is a crucial task when handling specimens in any scientific experiment. This is especially true for two-dimensional materials such as graphene, which are extraordinarily affected by contamination due to their large surface area. While many efforts have been made to reduce and remove contamination from such surfaces, the issue is far from resolved. Here we report on an in situ mechanical cleaning method that enables the site-specific removal of contamination from both sides of two dimensional membranes down to atomic-scale cleanliness. Further, mechanisms of re-contamination are discussed, finding surface-diffusion to be the major factor for contam…
