In the crossing between cardus and decumanus we can easily sum up the settlement of Piacenza; upon this scheme we can overlap a complexity made up of the several historical layers leading to the modern urban shape. This complexity can be seen as a sequence of limits, beyond which the urban fabric totally changes: these are the Po line, the XIX century walls, the highway. The layering of the urban core of Piacenza can be seen like an overcrossing of consecutive boundaries: pointing out these joint-areas, the project develops architectural devices to reveal unusual views and paths, throughout an unbroken ground design from south to north, using typical materials and plants. As thought in a Wu…
The Whole Is Greater than the Sum of the Parts: A Multilayer Approach on Criminal Networks
2022
Traditional social network analysis can be generalized to model some networked systems by multilayer structures where the individual nodes develop relationships in multiple layers. A multilayer network is called multiplex if each layer shares at least one node with some other layer. In this paper, we built a unique criminal multiplex network from the pre-trial detention order by the Preliminary Investigation Judge of the Court of Messina (Sicily) issued at the end of the Montagna anti-mafia operation in 2007. Montagna focused on two families who infiltrated several economic activities through a cartel of entrepreneurs close to the Sicilian Mafia. Our network possesses three layers which sha…
A MULTI-LAYER MODEL TO STUDY GENOME-SCALE POSITIONS OF NUCLEOSOMES
2007
The positioning of nucleosomes along chromatin has been implicated in the regulation of gene expression in eukaryotic cells, because packaging DNA into nucleosomes affects sequence accessibility. In this paper we propose a new model (called MLM) for the identification of nucleosomes and linker regions across DNA, consisting in a thresholding technique based on cut-set conditions. For this purpose we have defined a method to generate synthetic microarray data fully inspired from the approach that has been used by Yuan et al. Results have shown a good recognition rate on synthetic data, moreover, the $MLM$ shows a good agreement with the recently published method based on Hidden Markov Model …
A Fuzzy One Class Classifier for Multi Layer Model
2009
The paper describes an application of a fuzzy one-class classifier (FOC ) for the identification of different signal patterns embedded in a noise structured background. The classification phase is applied after a preprocessing phase based on a Multi Layer Model (MLM ) that provides a preliminary signal segmentation in an interval feature space. The FOC has been tested on synthetic and real microarray data in the specific problem of DNA nucleosome and linker regions identification. Results have shown, in both cases, a good recognition rate.

CFRP STRUCTURAL CAPACITORS: EFFECT OF DAMAGE AND MECHANICAL LOAD ON CAPACITANCE
2013
Aim of this work is to study the effect of mechanical load and damages, on the performance of structural capacitors, made by CFRP composite laminates with a PET dielectric film (treated with sodium hydroxide) inserted at the laminate middle-plane. Such capacitors have been characterized by ILSS and tensile tests and the properties so estimated were compared to those of the simple CFRP. By measuring the capacitance before mechanical loading, under loading and after unloading, it has been observed that, due to the damage of the CFRP layers, proved also by proper fractographic analysis, at high strain level the capacitance decreases although it exhibits a complete recovery after unloading. Suc…

CFD PREDICTION OF SCALAR TRANPORT IN THIN CHANNELS FOR REVERSE ELECTRODIALYSIS
2014
Reverse ElectroDialysis (RED) is a very promising technology allowing the electrochemical potential difference of a salinity gradient to be directly converted into electric energy. Fluid dynamics optimization of the thin channels to be devoted for the RED process is still an open problem. The present preliminary work focuses on the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation of the flow and concentration fields in these channels. In particular three different configurations were investigated: a channel unprovided with a spacer and two different spacer (made of either overlapped filaments or woven filaments) filled channels. Two passive scalars were transported along with the water in orde…
CFD Simulation of Particle Suspension Height in Stirred Vessels
2004
Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation capabilities for stirred solid–liquid dense systems are explored. These systems may give rise to the formation of a thick and well defined clear liquid layer in the upper part of the vessel, whose extension progressively reduces with increasing impeller speed. Experimental measurements of the suspension height (the height of the particle laden layer) were carried out at various agitation speeds for a variety of solid–liquid systems in a fully baffled transparent tank. A clear layer of liquid was actually observed in all runs, with the suspension height almost linearly dependent on agitation speed. CFD simulations of the above described systems w…
